They're doing what Japanese companies do, even though they're not Japanese. By putting someone in a position they don't want until they leave of their own accord. No firing=no severance

Well at least u have a job while u can look for the next job

Time to get super good at that position then.

I’m sorry.  I know dealing with job crap is hard.  I’m disabled and I don’t work anymore but I remember all that kind of crap.

i tried telling them i don't have the skills to do this job they just said "you'll be fine" the fuck? NONE of the skills in this position are anything in terms of what i've been doing the past five years. NONE of them. i need an out and i need one now

That seems a bit odd.  But, maybe they also think you're the most likely to adapt to the new position?

no, what happened is that they can't "just let you go" unless you really fuck up or you had multiple bad performance reviews. my last performance review was good. there were two people up this year for a promotion, me or someone else and I've been waiting longer. with that one person promoted, they can restructure the team how they want. the problem is that if i'm there, HR is going to ask why i was passed over with 5 straight years of an almost perfect performance rating. i'm the least experienced and it's easiest to move me out of the team, plus my manager has never liked me and moving me out of my team "resets" that clock and allows them to do what they've talked about and making the team a more "seniority" based team

this isn't the first time they've tried throwing this skillset at me. this was the skill i started with at the company, i moved specifically because i struggled with it. they know i struggled with this. ergo, they're intentionally giving me something that i can't do so i'll either quit or get walked

What is it you do, and what will you being doing moving forward?

Maybe someone here has experience and can give you some pointers.

Just throwing shit at the wall, man.

what i do is very niche and it's hard to explain. what i'd be doing is also very niche and hard to explain but it's niche in a way that won't help me move forward. i got some good advise from some people and some phone numbers as well i'll reach out to

That's rather nebulous.   Are we taking a different kind of programming?

I felt the same way at my last job. Had several periods where I thought I was never gonna get out of that place. Didn't stop me from trying though. Then I got a job offer and it was like a weight lifted off my shoulders. Worked out super well too cause I was on medical leave from a minor surgery when I got the offer so I got to actually enjoy my leave without the thought of having to go back to that hell-hole looming over me.

Not to say my new job is perfect but anything is better than that last place.

it's a lot harder for me. lot of places want more experience and i was trying to position myself for that. but this move throws a huge wrench into all of that. it's experience, but it's not the right kind and all it's going to do is force me to depend on them longer since i'd have to start at ground zero
