My Hero Academia Episode #24 (211) Discussion

So was using the fire just a one time thing?  Or he's just going to use it when he really needs to?

Todoroki vs Bakugo should be good.  I want Todoroki to win and Bakugo to lose... not sure which I want more.  Fuck Bakugo though lol.

Tennya's brother is dead.  Maybe should have shown him more before this to make this mean more?

Yeah an alliance between the League of Villains and Stain is just what we need...

Also I just realized portal guy is the same VA as the same as the plant guy from Space Dandy. :D

"Stain's design, bandanna, samurai equipment and perhaps even his lack of a nose may have possibly been inspired by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, given that they debuted in a comic with a much darker tone than what they are known for today."

  • Stain's dark outfit, choice of weapons and violent ideology are most likely derived from the comic book anti-heroes of the 90's, a trend galvanized primarily by creators like Rob Liefeld and Todd McFarlane. His mainly black costume and long, flowing, tattered red scarf are particularly reminiscent of McFarlane character Spawn.

LOL just what I was thinking. :D

Hero Killer Stain.  This edgelord is right of a EXTREEEEME 90s comic by Rob Liefeld or Todd McFarlane or something.  He even looks like an Image Comics character.

He's actually a great character, as usual MHA gets stuff right.

Their mistake was being girls in a Shonen. This ain't Sailor moon!

to be fair the girls in Sailor Moon aren't much better.....it's just that all the guys suck so bad it makes them look epic by comparison

In Season 3, there's a new villain that idolizes Stain and dresses like him with the added trait of BEING A LIZARD MAN.

This is a great show, but at this point it's on so damn early I almost never watch it live!

Rating: "B+". Bit of a misstep this week, but next week should bring it and then some with Todoroki vs. Bakugo, which is an awesome concept in its own right, but we'll probably also get a little more serious plot advancement with Not Spawn a.k.a. Hero Killer Stain.

Not all shonens have to be or are like that though.  And this show is said to avoid typical shonen mistakes.

The girls will noticeably improve in effectiveness.

Also keep in mind that the girls in 1A at least have quirks which are by and large not as strong as most of the boy's quirks, in terms of actual combat strength. The boys all have quirks that facilitate large AOE attacks, or extreme enhancements to physical performance. The girls you may notice (in 1A I mean) have quirks that tend to focus more on subversion and utility. What I think becomes apparent over the course of this anime is that those quirks can be just as effective but take more practice. Obviously, this makes sense as a quirk like Todoroki's is inherently more offensive over something like Uraraka's gravity manipulation, the later needs more cunning and planning to utilize to a consistent strong form of attack.

There is one notable exception I think to the girl's quirks, and that is Momo. She has one of the strongest quirks imo, but it is also significantly harder to use effectively as well.

I doubt anyone said that. We just said it was a good shonen.

More or less, it was said this show was executed well and doesn't fall into usual shonen pitfalls.  That it wasn't reinventing the wheel or anything, but is just really well done.

That's fair enough. And obviously the girls haven't been completely pathetic or useless or anything.  We've seen them be effective.  Just that in this tournament none of them went very far.  Yeah, and it's still unclear if Uraraka can make herself float or not.  I also wonder what level of control she has.  Is it just Zero G or Regular Gravity ON/OFF type thing, or can she create different levels of gravity?  Making someone or something really heavy could be just as useful, if she could do that.

Weapon creation right?  Yeah that's a pretty good offensive quirk, but Momo got thrown off in her battle.  Apparently it takes concentration to make the weapons?

@ben0119

All I can say without spoiling is that many of those questions will actually be answered in season 3, since Toonami is on the first half of season 2 that should give you an idea.

There is one thing to point out though, in season 1 it is mentioned how Momo's power actually works. She can convert the lipids she has stored in her body into objects, similar to the sugar guy who gets stronger the more glucose he ingests. So obviously there is a limit to how much she can create in terms of amount, and obviously exhaustion.

But there is no real limit on what she can create -which I think is a really strong ability and probably in the top 3 in terms of versatility in her class. The problem I see it is the more complex a quirk is the worse the person will be at being a hero early on as these seem to require much more practice and forethought. Certainly more than say shooting explosions out of your hands. That said, the girls in this show are much more effective on average than those in a lot of other shonens (I'm looking at you Naruto and Bleach).

Yeah Momo gets some character development later, but none of the girls really become a huge part of the plot by the end of S3.

Momo should have just made bright lights or flash bombs since Dark Shadow's weakness is light. She may not have known about his weakness at the time though.

Well I'm not asking for spoilers, of course.

Oh ok.  I guess I missed or forgot that.  I remember the part how Momo needs to concentrate and has to have exposed skin where she wants to bring a weapon out.

Yeah that makes sense.  More complex quirks will take more practice to use well.  Naruto girls yes, I don't agree with you about the Bleach girls.

I was under the impression Momo can't make complex weapons or tools like that.  She's made, like bats, and swords and stuff, right?  Maybe I forgot something.  So I figured it was like the T-1000.  ...Wow.  There's really not a Youtube clip where Arnie explains 1-000's abilities?  Well, whatever.  You know what I mean.

She can make anything. She could make grenades and bombs if she wanted.

Oh.

You are right, though, Momo may not have known about Dark Shadow's weakness, like you said.  And making something more complex like that would presumably take even more concentration for her to create.
