PLEASE NOTE: Due to the Labor Day holiday, ratings for Dragon Ball Super Thursday and Friday probably won't be available until Tuesday, and ratings for the My Hero Academia marathon probably won't be available until Wednesday.

Also won't be available until Tuesday: me. Or.... until Monday rather. I gotta go on a trip that involves sharing a hotel with family.

Hey, that's pretty good!!!

http://programminginsider.com/thursday-final-ratings-cbs-leads-all-key-figures-amid-many-preemptions-due-to-local-nfl-preseason-telecasts/

Dragon Ball Super (repeat) (ADSM, 8:00 PM, 30 min.)

• 0.15 A18-49 (#66)
• 0.18 A18-34 (#22)
• 0.15 A25-54 (#77)

I ain't even pasting the American Dad number anymore, because even though it won the battle that night, it LOST THE WAR!!! (Dang you, Bullhorn!) We've got a DOUBLE-SHOT of Dragon Ball Super coming next week; now can y'all dig that, because THAT'S PRETTY SWEET!! (AAAAHHHH!!!)

Well, this is not terrible, given the circumstances...

Adult Swim PROGRAM Viewers (000) A1849 rating A1849 (000)
10:00 My Hero Academia (r) 445 0.20 261
10:30 My Hero Academia (r) 375 0.17 219
11:00 My Hero Academia (r) 389 0.17 219
11:30 My Hero Academia (r) 427 0.19 243
12:00a My Hero Academia (r) 411 0.18 233
12:30a My Hero Academia (r) 383 0.18 226
ProgrammingInsider.com
1:00a My Hero Academia (r) 375 0.17 218
1:30a My Hero Academia (r) 356 0.15 195
2:00a My Hero Academia (r) 320 0.15 187
2:30a My Hero Academia (r) 309 0.15 189

3:30a My Hero Academia (r) 355 0.16 208
4:00a My Hero Academia (r) 343 0.16 210

Nothing under 300K or 0.15 18-49. Both averages, not counting the "bonus" half-hour at 4 AM, were next-to-last worst so far for the year (34 out of 35), at 375,500 and 217,750, respectively.

Friday, I guess we'll never know, since guides screwed that one up.

But here are the ratings for Dragon Ball Super on Monday and Tuesday:

http://programminginsider.com/monday-final-ratings-espn-leads-prime-time-in-viewers-and-key-adult-and-male-demos-with-college-football/

Dragon Ball Super (repeat) (ADSM, 8:00 PM, 30 min.)
• 0.494 million viewers (#75)
• 0.28 HH (#79)
• 0.17 A18-49 (#58)
• 0.21 A18-34 (#33)
• 0.16 A25-54 (#80)

Now I'm a little disappointed following the encore of the Adventure Time Finale special that premiered at 6 PM, DBS couldn't crack 500K, but those are all new highs for Monday except households, which tied, and for what it's worth, it beat AD in total viewers and adults 18-34.

http://programminginsider.com/tuesday-final-ratings-series-premieres-of-mayans-m-c-and-the-purge-and-telefilm-bobby-brown-story-part-1-all-perform-well/

Dragon Ball Super (repeat) (ADSM, 8:00 PM, 30 min.)
• 0.427 million viewers (#81)
• 0.28 HH (#79)
• 0.15 A18-49 (#77)
• 0.15 A18-34 (#48)
• 0.15 A25-54 (#86)

DBS beat AD in total viewers and households on Tuesday, but none of the demographics. Still, it's taking over the 8:30 slot after this week, so yay!

Well, this is interesting...

http://programminginsider.com/live3-weekly-ratings-younger-season-finale-more-than-doubles-its-persons-18-49-from-same-day-figures/

My Hero Academia [R] (ADSM, Sat., 9/1/18 10:00 PM)
• Live+Same Day: 0.445 million viewers / 0.261 million adults 18-49 (0.20 adults 18-49 rating)
• Live+3 Day: 0.468 million viewers (+0.023M; +5.17%) / 0.273 million adults 18-49 (0.21 adults 18-49 rating) (+0.012M; +0.01 rating; +4.60%)

My Hero Academia [R] (ADSM, Sat., 9/1/18 10:30 PM)
• Live+Same Day: 0.375 million viewers / 0.220 million adults 18-49 (0.17 adults 18-49 rating)
• Live+3 Day: 0.395 million viewers (+0.020M; +5.33%) / 0.230 million adults 18-49 (0.18 adults 18-49 rating) (+0.010M; +0.01 rating; +4.55%)

Miniscule gains for MHA in delayed (Live+3) viewing.

Dragon Ball Super (repeat) (ADSM, 8:00 PM, 30 min.)
• 0.354 million viewers (#92)

• 0.13 A18-49 (#85)
• 0.15 A18-34 (#44)
• 0.12 A25-54 (#95)

Not the best for a Wednesday, which at this point has the worst average of any day of the week. And American Dad gained on it, for what it's worth.

Dragon Ball Super (repeat) (ADSM, 8:00 PM, 30 min.)

• 0.16 A18-49 (#55)

Considering the competition that was the NFL kickoff game, that's not too shabby!

Well,

http://www.showbuzzdaily.com/articles/showbuzzdailys-top-150-saturday-cable-originals-network-finals-9-8-2018.html

Final-Cable-2018-Sep-08.SAT_.png

College Football dominates, but at least all 5 eligible cable originals made the Top 50, and we seem to have beaten Live PD for once, unless it was a rerun and therefore ineligible, which is most likely the case; if so, smart move on A&E's part.

Wow, a premiere of DBS below 700K!? Either MHA before DBS was clearly a mistake, or people just aren't taking to this new arc and art style! But its effect on 18-34 was even worse:

Adults 18-34
Show Rating Estimate Retention
DBS 0.29 197,000      N/A
AOTS3 0.22 150,000 75.86%
FLCL3 0.24 163,000 109.09%
PTE 0.23 156,000 95.83%
JoJo4 0.21 143,000 91.30%

Now granted, those are just estimates, but it's possible the whole Toonami block had LESS THAN 200K 18-34 watching last night, unless MHA pulled it off, which we'll probably know later on today.

Another show that seemed to have beaten every show on the block, and which coincidentally is on the same channel, is the premiere of Total Drama-rama.  Which makes sense, considering it's a long-awaited return of a franchise to CN, and it's a show premiere this week anyway.

http://programminginsider.com/friday-final-ratings-7-million-watch-stand-up-to-cancer-telethon-across-big-4-networks/

Dragon Ball Super (repeat) (ADSM, 8:00 PM, 30 min.)
• 0.434 million viewers (#82)

• 0.18 A18-49 (#58)
• 0.22 A18-34 (#17)
• 0.20 A25-54 (#61)

That 0.2 in 25-54 is a new personal best for that demo for DBS at 8 PM! Summing up the whole week, we had:

Dragon Ball Super Recent Week's Weeknight Ratings
Week 10 Viewers HH 18-49 18-34 25-54
9/3 494,000 0.28 0.17 0.21 0.16

9/6 497,000 0.29 0.16 0.19 0.15
9/7 434,000 0.30 0.18 0.22 0.20

Weeknight Ratings Rank (Across ALL Primetime Cable)

9/4 #81 #79 #77 #48 #86
9/5 #92 #87 #85 #44 #95
9/6 #64 #72 #55 #20 #73
9/7 #82 #75 #58 #17 #61

And so as a whole, the weekly averages so far have been:

Dragon Ball Super M-F Weekly Avgs
Wk P2+ HH 18-49 18-34 25-54
#1 453,800 0.283 0.150 0.173 0.143
#2 456,000 0.288 0.174 0.216 0.148
#3 438,800 0.264 0.152 0.184 0.132
#4 421,200 0.258 0.150 0.186 0.134
#5 415,800 0.272 0.158 0.178 0.146
#6 454,200 0.288 0.164 0.180 0.158
#7 441,600 0.282 0.166 0.190 0.148

#10 441,200 0.280 0.158 0.184 0.156

On a weekly average, there have been good weeks and bad weeks, but also some days of the week are better than others:

Dragon Ball Super Day-Of-Week Averages
DOW P2+ HH 18-49 18-34 25-54
MON 417,100 0.260 0.149 0.174 0.133
TUE 436,000 0.277 0.164 0.187 0.147
WED 409,800 0.267 0.151 0.173 0.138
THU 466,900 0.293 0.160 0.194 0.149
FRI 446,667 0.278 0.167 0.188 0.159

Mondays and Wednesdays are clearly the worst or 2nd worst, while Thursday leads in total viewers, households, and 18-34, but Friday leads in 18-49 and 25-54.

But this week the game changes, as DBS has taken over the 8:30 timeslot. We'll see later today how the first day of this experiment panned out...

I'll show ya what excites ME:

Dm18-doUwAAMPpO.jpg

Why post this here? Because I believe this move seems to be at least partially motivated by ratings. It's no question that DBZ Kai has been Toonami's highest rated show and the Frieza arc was its best arc, so kicking off the night with it just seems academic to me (no offense to the Academia show currently kicking off the block). Of course, at this point, its only lead-in will likely be an hour of Family Guy at 8 PM. Plus the Boruto/Super hour seems to be a potential windfall later in the night.

http://programminginsider.com/monday-final-ratings-espn-dominates-prime-time-despite-third-consecutive-decline-for-opening-week-monday-night-football-doubleheader/

Dragon Ball Super (repeat) (ADSM, 8:00 PM, 30 min.)

• 0.28 HH (#80)
• 0.17 A18-49 (#51)

Dragon Ball Super (repeat) (ADSM, 8:30 PM, 30 min.)

• 0.16 A18-49 (#58)
• 0.18 A18-34 (#33)
• 0.16 A25-54 (#73)

Well, that didn't go as well as I had hoped, but this is just one day. At least the 18-49s only dropped slightly and the 18-34s and 25-54s kept pace.

Don't get me wrong: I don't believe we'll get back to a million anytime soon, if ever. But I DO have high hopes that the Guy/Kai combo can at least get us back to 800K or 900K. It might take a little help from CN at this point though. If they can lead-in to Family Guy with blockbuster animated and CGI movies once again, then it might be feasible.

Also, I wonder how long it will be until we see a Gundam back on Toonami? If ratings are just too low for Gundam right now, I guess the best bet for something new is the slot right after Dragon Ball Super once FLCL Alternative ends. Of course, if we're talking a rerun of Unicorn, that goes in the back, in either hour 6 (replacing OPM) or hour 7.

Not MHA's best observed delayed-viewing gain (that was actually 8/18/18), but Dragon Ball Super's gain is beastly!

Hey, not too shabby! Dragon Ball Super back over 700K, and AOT almost 600K:

Big fall for Pop Team Epic, though, but at least both it and JoJo still made the Top 50.

And then with the update, we see once again why Black Clover is moving up 30 minutes:

"The Adult Swim line-up performed as follows:  MY HERO ACADEMIA up 0.04 to 0.28/643K, DRAGON BALL up 0.07 to 0.35, ATTACK ON TITAN up 0.08 to 0.28, FLCL up 0.06 to 0.23, POP TEAM EPIC steady at 0.16, JOJO’S BIZARRE ADVENTURES steady at 0.16, HUNTER X HUNTER steady at 0.16/335K, BLACK CLOVER up 0.01 to 0.17/354K, NARUTO up 0.01 to 0.17/319K, ONE-PUNCH MAN up 0.04 to 0.18/317K, LUPIN THE 3RD steady at 0.14//256K, and COWBOY BEBOP down 0.01 to 0.13/248K."

Not bad for the next-to-last time we see the 6-hour block!

Last but not least, because I say this post isn't ridiculously long enough, Friday's ratings for Dragon Ball Super Power Hour and a look back on the first week of that Power Hour as a whole!

I'm not posting all the numbers, but just get a load of how far Mike Tyson Mysteries fell afterward--286K! Methinks THAT was a bad programming move! Venture 3-peats would probably do better there!

Friday's numbers pull 18-49 and 25-54 down to 2nd place overall, but that's still impressive!

Is anyone really all that surprised by this? We knew Dragon Ball Super would do pretty well with a Monday-Friday power hour!

Finally, in Day-of-Week comparisons, Thursday still dominates in all except 25-54 and 18-49, the latter of which it ties:

Well, this is interesting:

https://programminginsider.com/saturday-final-ratings-abc-and-espn-in-prime-time-draw-the-two-most-watched-college-football-games-of-the-week/

The 2nd Family Guy won the night, but Rick & Morty didn't drop very far from there--at least in terms of total viewers, but Dragon Ball Super won the night in Adults 18-49 and Adults 18-34. Across all Primetime Cable, DBS was 2nd only to the Alabama/Mississippi game in 18-34, and My Hero Academia was #4, also behind the Washington/Utah game.

If I had to guess, Toonami will likely have a ripple effect when the new schedule starts, beginning with the Guy/Kai combo at 8:30-9:30, then again with Dragon Ball Super at 11, and then a couple of hours later with Black Clover at 1. BC might even move up to 12:30, but it's proved itself to be quite the late-night champion. I hate to say it, but the whole block will probably be much better off without Pop Team Epic, though I suppose it might show up at some point for an encore in the later reaches of the block, and that would be fine.

Then after Toonami, the block didn't recover, picking up steam slightly in total viewers for the Boondocks, but dropping from there in Adults 18-49.

It's cool that the writer is sticking to his guns, even being somewhat giddy at the controversy the first article caused.

And, you know, I actually am starting to feel bad for Black Clover and its fans. Most of the critiques of it I've seen have little to do about the show itself, instead slamming it for what it isn't. So what if it's not this completely original masterwork? A show doesn't have to be that way for it to turn out at least good. I mean, look at Megalo Box! That show managed to do so much with a basic and time-tested plot that had been used many times before. Of course, superior direction is definitely what made that show into a candidate for the best show of the year, but it would've been palatable either way.

I think there are many people who are bashing BC based on what they know of its bare basics. To them, Asta will forever be loud (although he's apparently improved in the sub), the plot will always be a rip-off of every better shonen series, and there won't be a point to watching it. They don't want to learn more about the show to correct these opinions because they don't care. I don't know if all the people saying that it gets better are correct, but I have enough faith in them to want to give the show another chance, and I think all the haters should entertain that idea as well.

The only objectively wrong thing this dude seems to believe in is that the show is the best shonen to air in years. I suppose it might be up there, but what about My Hero Academia? That's the gold standard for such shows in this day and age, considering all the money it's made, the awards it's won, and the critics singing the show's praises at all opportunities. I wouldn't go this far.

I guess you could defend that somehow in the past few weeks, Black Clover has become the best NEW shonen in 2 years--since My Hero Academia began.

At least it's a hell of a lot better than Darling In The Franxx--good Lord, that was disappointing, and I have NO desire for that to end up on Toonami--I'd rather have more Gundam.

In other news, Super started out low but built nicely from 8 to 8:30. If I had to take a wild guess, I'd say the 8 PM episode even built on CN's closer, Gumball.

And I won't post it, but American Dad actually FELL from there in Total Viewers! (Though it was flat in households and gained in all the demos.)

That 8:30 timeslot set new personal bests for Dragon Ball Super in households, Adults 18-49, and Adults 25-54! And it's still early, but at this point Week 12 is now leading in everything except adults 18-34.

I just KNEW Goku Black swinging a scythe and opening some sort of bizarre rift in space and sending forth multiple copies of himself, while Trunks and Mai try to contain Zamasu with the Evil Containment Wave would be good for ratings!

Wednesday didn't do as well for Dragon Ball Super, but still pretty admirable, ESPECIALLY that 18-34 rank for the 2nd episode, which featured Future Trunks using his huge Spirit Sword and finally cleaving Merged Zamasu in half!

DBS hasn't seen an episode hit as high as #15 on the 18-34 rankings since 8/3! And the 0.24 ties its 2nd highest; you have to go way back into the Beerus saga, with the Super Saiyan God ritual, to see a higher rating (0.26 on 7/12).

But I suppose none of that really matters, since it we now know the REAL reason DBS aired at 8:30 on weeknights: [as] is losing the 8 PM hour to CN starting on 10/1, so it was actually to speed up the run so that they get caught up reasonably close to the Toonami broadcast. This also explains why [as] doesn't seem to have made a commercial for this "power hour"--it's temporary, and Dragon Ball Super's current weeknight run shall end with unlucky Week 13. Even more of a slap in the face is the fact that they WON'T be airing Episodes 79 and 80 on Friday the 28th (which would catch up to 81 airing on Toonami on the 29th), opting instead for a 4.5-hour repeating Bob's Burgers marathon with an hour of The Brak Show sandwiched in the middle.

Now losing the 8 PM hour in the 4th Quarter of a year is nothing new--in fact, last year was the only year it hasn't happened for many years, oddly enough in part because Dragon Ball Super was doing quite well for itself with an 8 PM power hour on Saturdays 2 hours before Toonami began at 11, but this time it feels more like it's helping out [as], which just unceremoniously lost 2 of its biggest performers in the 8 PM hour, and had to bring in Super Saiyan Blue Goku as its pinch-hitter (who ironically plays baseball in the lame duck power hour tonight), than CN.

Of course, there IS a silver lining to this dark cloud: from 10/6 onward, [as] actually BEGINS Saturday nights with Toonami for the first time ever, and kicking it off is none other than the great DBZ Kai! This could be a TREMENDOUS move for ratings depending on what CN decides to close with. If they bring back Hollywood movies, this could be HUGE!

Not really. I think they'll start running it again (from the beginning) after CN loses the extra hour.

It's weird that they're doing Pete Smith Day again, and the schedule is fairly different. It's almost all BB, whereas last year's version had an equal split of Bob's and Brak. And next week, they're not running the former at all until Friday, leading to weird schedules with three episodes of American Dad! and Family Guy on different days. I wonder if there's actually a practical reason for doing it this time, which is a way to test a contingency plan for if they lose another Fox show.

"This dark cloud" - Hey, dark clouds eventually pass and the sunshine returns! I'd say it's gone until January, but then it will probably return from the beginning.

Even if that's true, I don't get why they can't give the Dragon Ball Super Power Hour a proper sendoff at 8 PM (complete with an annoying amount of reminders that Dragon Ball Super's time is changing to 11 PM on Toonami) and start an all-nighter of Bob's Burgers at 9? Sticking that random-ass hour of the Brak Show in there just seems silly. But I suppose we'll see that all over Monday through Thursday, even though if you haven't been watching DBS at 10:30 on Toonami, you'll miss a couple of fairly important episodes of the current arc.

So, Live+3's are in for the week of 9/15, and they're as follows:

https://programminginsider.com/live3-weekly-ratings-american-horror-story-apocalypse-premiere-ranks-as-second-most-watched-cable-program-of-2018-to-date/

My Hero Academia [R] (ADSM, Sat., 9/15/18 10:00 PM)

Dragon Ball Super (ADSM, Sat., 9/15/18 10:30 PM)

Decent gain for MHA but MONSTER gains for Super.

And speaking of Super...

Interesting. All the raw numbers from this conclusion of the Future Trunks/Goku Black/Zamasu arc were lower than the episode on Wednesday which SHOULD have been its conclusion, but in terms of 18-34 ranking, these episodes did better. However, as I mentioned before, [as] is losing the DBS Power hour to CN on 10/1, but strangely enough, there's a rumor that the power hour may continue--just on CN and not [as]. I didn't know that was possible...

Yeah, you're right. That WAS laughable. It's just gonna be an hour of Gumball leading-in to American Dad. Not sure what the hell they're thinking with that one.

BUT, potentially HUGE for Toonami's ratings is Puss N' Boots (the movie) leading-in to DBZ Kai. These blockbuster movies ALL seem to do well on CN, they provided a decent lead-in to Dragon Ball Super last year, and now they will likely do the same for Toonami as a whole.

Now I ain't saying the million-pluses will return, except of course for DBS in delayed viewing, but I'd say the first 2.5 hours staying in the 800K range is entirely feasible!

adult swim was already airing super at 8, it makes no sense for cartoon network to take 8 pm just to do that. also, there's no reason to put stock in any "rumors" when, if the schedule shows something, it's not a rumor, and if it doesn't, it's just someone pulling something out of their ass.

however, cartoon network wouldn't necessarily have to edit anything from super. they're no stranger to airing TV-14 stuff, and language isn't an issue in general. maybe they'd be competent and rate it down anyway since adult swim's s&p slap a TV-14-L on a lot of anime for TV-PG level language (while not always giving TV-PG episodes an L for the same words), constantly, for years. it's never made any sense. but cartoon network aren't going to air it anyway so whatever.

And now, the last report of the [as] lead-in era! Dragon Ball Super rises to a level not seen for a while, at least in total viewers, but then Attack on Titan, ehhh...

Final-Cable-2018-Sep-22.SAT_.png

And of course, it was just downhill from there as usual. Though JoJo soundly beat Pop Team Epic in 18-49, which is nice to see. Good riddance to that weirdness, I guess? Though I wouldn't be surprised to see it end up on the back-end at 3:30 AM as a lead-in to repeats of the latest season of Robot Chicken at 4 AM. That would seem to be a decent way to use it.

Next week, it looks like in this report, we'll see:

BORUTO (10:30)
DRAGON BALL SUPER (11 PM)
FLCL: ALTERNATIVE (11:30)
ATTACK ON TITAN (12 AM)
JOJO'S BIZARRE ADVENTURE (12:30)

So, basically the same timeslots as this week, just with different shows. Of course, we SHOULD see My Hero Academia, Naruto Shippuden, Black Clover, and Hunter x Hunter as well, but clueless [as] will probably just go on listing them as reruns.

Man. Super hasn't been this high in a long time, but as usual everything after that just takes a damn nose dive. ... Oh and I see Super even beat Total Drama-rama! :o Is this the first time that happened on a Saturday?

Depends on which stat you're talking about. In Adults 18-49, it did last week, and so did Attack on Titan. In Adults 18-34, both shows as well as FLCL Alternative last week beat it. But in total viewers, yeah, I believe this might be the first time Dragon Ball Super has beaten it.

Speaking of Dragon Ball Super, its last Friday appearance for the foreseeable future didn't do so hot:

Dragon Ball Super (repeat) (ADSM, 8:00 PM, 30 min.)
• 0.378 million viewers (#81)
• 0.25 HH (#80)

• 0.13 A18-49 (#83)
• 0.14 A18-34 (#48)
• 0.12 A25-54 (#95)

No Top 50 18-34 for the Arale episode? Ouch. Well, at least the Baseball episode did hit the Top 50. Still, swing and a miss.

So here's Week 12 as a whole, plus the averages for the first 12 weeks:

Week 12 still did very good, coming in 4th place overall in total viewers, a fairly distant 2nd in 18-49, even more so in 18-34, and tops in households and 25-54! This week will probably serve as a benchmark for DBS's return to 8 PM beyond this week if they ever decide to try it again.

I'm saving the big statistical wrap-up, including daily highs and lows, for next week.

Flop Team Epic probably ensures DeMarco won’t pick up a comedy anime for several years.

Looks like 2018 is gonna end with a whimper for all non DB items.

For Pop Team Epic, you're probably right. UNLESS it's the next season of Pop Team Epic, and they get a Titan-style dub premiere deal for that. Even so, AFTER JoJo this time.

As for the rest of the block besides DB shows, we don't know that. Boruto might be huge, and pairing it with Naruto Shippuden seems to be the right move to me.

I'll have my analyses up here in a bit, but so far, it seems this was one of the better ratings reports since Toonami took 10 PM.

And so ends an era, and with the next Ratings Report, we begin a new one--a brave new one in which Toonami's lead-in is nothing but CN. It's been a long time coming, 10 years to be exact, so let's usher it in and hope it does well!
