HardcoreHunter Posted May 12, 2018 Posted May 12, 2018 Because I have to hike out into the woods to shoot a Turkey. Really wish I had some chocolate pudding though.
NaBarney Posted May 12, 2018 Posted May 12, 2018 I drove by a huge male turkey standing alone in a field yesterday. Usually I only ever see a group of females sometimes with babies

Are you going with other people? It's about 1:40am here, working on an archaeology paper, did part of it, but gonna go to be soon, and work more on it later.

Heard some shots on the other mountain an hour after dawn, after that the forest was pretty dead, nothing seemed to be moving.

If you're right handed that is the side that the butt of the gun is on so it's your blind spot for shooting. Turkey are pretty observant of any movement and will get the hell outta dodge if they see something suspicious. Aside from that one the rest of the week all I've seen are hens. In spring you can't shoot hens, only in the fall.

Maybe because they usually stick together whereas the guys are loners so they often go undetected? Or maybe there's just a lot fewer males because of hunting. Idk

Rogue_Alphonse Posted May 12, 2018 Posted May 12, 2018 My gf and I almost got one at about 45mph with a Nissan Sentra yesterday. Shoulda floored it and swerved at it... but that Sentra is terribly underpowered like all Nissans

One Jake/Tom will control a territory and combat other males. Young Jakes though will work together to fight a Tom and try to steal the Harem and territory. Some Tom's will have a Jake with them as a scout. The Jake enters areas before the Tom and if the Jake doesn't get Shot then the Tom will think it's safe. So pretty much it's because of territory and mating habits as to why it's more difficult to find males. As well Jakes that live long enough to become Tom's become smarter. Some can even tell the difference between a call and a hen.

I often wondered if animals have evolved to be weary of human interaction.
