Why do people need so much conflict in their entertainment in order to enjoy it?

Conflict is a basic element of narrative.

Not that all conflicts must be violent, but it's where you develop tension.

It's one easy way to develop tension... it depends on semantics around the word "conflict". Like you say, it need not be violent and in the case of something like an existential crisis a person may be internally conflicted while not being in a state of confrontation with another person. I sense that the OP intended "conflict" to be taken in the context of confrontations between people and that tension need not be the result of confrontations, which is something of an obsession in our culture.

Yes. OBSESSED.

Also, people are disgusted with people who DO have somewhat easy lives.

In the movie Split the Beast wants to eat young girls and kill them simply because life hasnt damaged them and no one i know who watched the movie had a problem with that.
