we need more history majors because people are forgetting or whitewashing theirs. esp where i live. if i see one more idiot ask whys there black history month and not a white history month ?

Sounds like some people aren't teaching it properly, a saddening notion. I think America does tend to gloss over its heinous history with slavery and civil rights. Teachers tend to causally mentions that slaves were sold as property without even thinking that they are reaffirming those ideals without mentioning the lost humanity behind it. Teachers are now arguing the civil war started out of an "Economic issue" without even fucking realizing the "economics were people.

not just with slavery but with the genocide of native Americans too.

my daughter starts talking abt natives like shes been programmed. "they lived in teepees and ate buffalo" in the singsong voice.

i say "madison have you ever seen a native american?"

she says no

then i tell her its because Europeans and the u.s. govt killed most of them. they are whitewashing everything!

If you were to teach her,

I think good place to start is to mention the selfishness of the U.S. wanting the land the Natives lived on. The natives wanted to keep their homes, but America kept making excuses why they were in danger or in economic need. You mention that it is propaganda, a technique governments use to lie and sway public perception. And then tell her how they forced them by violence and had churches try force them out of their religion.

Oh god, that is a difficult one.

You can mention that Africans came from a different land across the ocean called Africa. And show her a map, maybe a printed one, or an image on the computer screen. Then mention, when the original American settlers forced natives from their homes, they needed people to work to grow food and build homes and buildings for them. Horrible businessmen choose to kidnap them from there homes and forced them to work in horrible conditions. They would hurt them, separate them for their familes and treat them as objects less than humans. And tell her it wasn't good and made people very sad.

thx. youre good at this. maybe you should consider writing kid history stories because they are badly needed.

you included a lot of details and left out as much racial stuff as you could. thanks. this is great!

I wonder if Barnes and noble carries something like that, that would be interesting. Other than that might be an issue with access down there as well.

I like this a lot

I literally got into a fight with this guy I had two semesters with as a classmate over his mentality like this. He wouldn't shut up about how America was superior because of our capitalist system and causally ignored how people lived in poverty. Just the stupidest libertarian things, and would not shut up cocky as fuck! /rant

But yeah he was and economics major, and a jerk.

I know the counties in Oakland around here can't afford to keep their libraries anymore and have to get the community to make their own it's own kind. It sucks how the government doesn't prioritize education.
