Why is it that all of these classical statues of beautiful nude men with well-propositioned muscular bodies have teeny weeny weenies, and yet, in Japanese art,(like in pillow books)the men have most  of their clothes on  with anacondas hanging out of them?

The Japanese are obviously self- conscious of the fact they all have little yellow weenies.  :D :D

Maybe, but my older daughter and I got into a discussion of this one night when she was still in school, and she went through all of her art history books and quizzed her friends in the dorm and we still couldn't come up with a real answer besides "that's just the way they like it."

I learned this in art history myself so I'm surprised she couldn't find it in the books, but there's a double reason. In classical times, a smaller uncircumcised penis was considered a trait of nobility and desired; while being both hung like a horse and circumcised was a trait of the uncivilized outsider (the African, Arab, or Jew). 2nd, the artists responsible for such intentionally go smaller when it comes to the genitals to avoid it from being the focal point / first thing you see when looking at the work.

For all we know, David's a grower and that thing blows up by a few inches when erect (not to mention it's probably really cold in there).

Thank you - that's one more thing to check off my why I can't sleep at night list. (But why are the Japanese so huge?)

Also, in all fairness to my daughter, I may have been subjecting here to one of those discussions that you don't want to have with your mother especially in a crowded dorm room.

I read somewhere that if you look at the statue from what would be Goliath's perspective, David's face has a look of fear/angst.

So it could just be retracted in because he's afraid he's gonna die.

Nonsense. Death turns on those Spartans.

Smaller male genitals were often seen as an alluring quality to younger or youthful men as they were often viewed as sexually desirable by stronger men if I'm not mistaken. It's the same principle of a female with well shaped perky tits being preferred over giant sandbags (unsightly proportions). Youthful men in antiquity were portrayed in smaller stature with masculine but "less masculine" bodies than say a full blown rugged soldier type. Ironically David probably never looked anything like that in real life, not even remotely.

For what it's worth, Japanese erotic art, or shunga,  typically exaggerated both genitals and not just the penis.

Beyond artistic efforts to draw the viewer to "the action," I'm not really sure why they did that, though. I study Japanese history and can tell you that, during WWII, when an American prisoner was captured, it was very likely for them to be castrated by Japanese troops. They did some seriously fucked up things with the genitals of American troops, but there are pictures of triumphant Japanese soldiers that are nude and have full erections as they stand by their collection of severed Americans penises.

Not just castrated, erected and penis and testicles removed with a sword. God I know too many things I wish I didn't.

I also would comment as to why I think they enlarged genitals, it's probably the same reason that many African tribes and Pacific Islanders had giant phallic totems of worship, people are superstitious and retarded. Genitals, in general, were seen as a source of mystical power, some more gravitating towards female genitals and some more towards males. In fact, alot of the separation of sexes stuff came from the notion of hypnotic powers women could use to control or manipulate men magically and thus an inherent fear of their mystical nono part powers.
