Exactly (This part is for @fuggnificent) It's not that BDSM or fetishism are a bad thing; relinquishing control of your sexual desires is an important part of having a realistic and healthy relationship and its something that a lot of men (and even a few women) need. But for Deja, sexual desires are secondary to the fact that she was attacked and assaulted. Asking her exerting control over her new husband isn't going to allow her to open up to him as make her reenact the abuse she endured in the role of perpetrator, and that can only end up a few ways - either she embraces the role of abuser or (more likely) the process opens up a lot of ugly, panful wounds that makes it even worse. BDSM doms are highly experienced individuals who understand that what they're doing takes a good deal of care and that, if done improperly, can easily become abuse.

Ugh. Why on earth are you having your protagonist get into BDSM after she was brutally raped? Maybe I'm not the best person to point this out, but BDSM is going to reinforce control issues with a woman who has been violated, even if she is given the opportunity to be the dom. I'm not saying it can't be done, but there are definitely psychological barriers that would make intimacy more difficult if what you're trying to do is make Deja and Whateverhisnameis open up about their feelings for each other.

Differ if you must, but learning a new skill is not the same thing as learning to expand one's understanding. The latter is possible for everyone, the former is not (nor should it be). There's nothing wrong with not learning a new skill, and as brutal as we can be, there's nothing wrong with being a janitor. The OP, however, isn't about refusing to learn a new skill as much as it is about casually musing that those who do will be easily devalued by bosses for learning a "useless" skill.
