Railroad unions threaten strike over sick leave demands
scoobdog replied to matrixman124's topic in Current Events
I wonder how the Republicans will push a worse deal, unless the point is that if the deal is rejected, the rail companies can back out of the deal and the Republicans will stand by? -
Genocide is often and erroneously taken to be synonymous with ethnic cleansing.

Gotta look at something while planning your next hit job. -
I seem to recall you contemplating life over a circular saw before…

Nah, that Colts loss would kill any boner.

Not that such a claim was made in this thread, but government created famines do count as genocide. Social engineering on the scale that both Mao and Stalin attempted following their respective revolutions were predicated on forced behavioral modification through a social and economic “reset”. The resulting collapse is a feature rather than a byproduct, making widespread starvation and high fatality rates among vulnerable groups a factorable part of the equation.

That's not even the correct quote, and the phrasing is very important in that particular instance. -

It looks like the plan on sacrificing a virgin to summon the dark lord to resurrect him... in that uniform. -
But, for real, Alabama isn’t getting into the CFP no matter what Saban says. Glad to see Brian Kelly living up to expectations though.

Oh shit.

The key is to not fry a turkey that hasn’t completely defrosted. The flames look dangerous, but it’s actually the flying, boiling oil that causes the damage, and combining that oil with frozen bits of Turkey is a recipe for projectiles and explosive steam. That’s why you do it at least 20’ from the nearest structure, never near dry foliage, elevated on a fire resistant tarp and with a K-type (oil fire) extinguisher.

Beat me to it. Helps showed up in my FB feed.

I dunno. Unless you have, like, a huge yard deep frying a bird seems like a bad idea.

2024 Presidential Elections: the schadenfreude commences
scoobdog replied to NewBluntsworth's topic in Current Events
They will. The GOP won’t survive this, at least not in its current form, and I think the Christian reich will be the ones that end up on the outside. -

Dealing with Trump is the only way forward. Trump isn’t effective as a political boss, so he’s not capable of leading the party. But, he can still motivate his base to do his bidding. The only way forward for the Republican Party is to defang his acolytes. -
I think there’s more context. It’s an unquestioned given that acts he’s accused of are premeditated murder, but it is difficult to define a motive with deep psychological roots like bigotry without an established history (preferably with progression / regression). How do you say he murdered the victims solely because he hates all LGBTQ+ people when, say, there are instances where he engaged them as part of his reckoning with his own gender? The hate enhancements aren’t a substitute for justifying the killings so you would have to prove there is a pattern of hating LGBTQ+ people before the murders take place, and that’s difficult in this scenario. One thing to also consider is that our justice system rarely delves into the concept of self loathing. It’s not generally a successful argument for either exonerating a defendant or convicting them simply because it runs counter to the concept of self preservation that is used to define the victim. That tends to be a factor when prosecutors consider hate enhancement charges: they usually have solid proof that someone is lying about their intentions before pursuing a conviction.

It could even be an outright lie meant to confuse... its not like the defense lawyers know who their client is after three or four days. It very well could be misinformation.

There is no evidence of extrajudicial "beheadings" or massacres by Ukrainian nationalists.

Elon Musk now owns Twitter, apparently trying to run it into the ground
scoobdog replied to Jman's topic in Current Events
Exactly. A better way to look at it is that morality exists to emulate empathy, to essentially cover for our limitations as humans: it’s a how-to-be-nice handbook for people who don’t want to be or simply can’t be nice. Narcissists, sociopaths and psychopaths, of which quite a few idolized celebrities number, have the ability to use morality to cover for their deficiencies. Steve Jobs, a notoriously awful person who nonetheless built a star struck following, had capable people at Apple around him to be his moral compass. Mother Theresa had Roman Catholic catechism. Elon Musk has neither. As to why those who build cults of personalities are the same who lack empathy, the psychological ramifications are hard to pin down partially because the reasons we develop as adults without empathy vary. -

Even people with extremely low EQ can have a moral compass - you don't need to empathize with other people to understand the objective elements of social interaction. Morality is not a replacement for empathy; that's how entities like the Catholic Church have been able to survive for as long as they have despite extensive histories of profoundly amoral behavior. On that point, there's no question that Elon Musk lacks empathy, and that's how his off-kilter moral compass is allowed to lead him places that cause pain and anguish for lots of people.
