Might be the igniter. When the thermostat senses that the temp is too low, it sends a signal to start a cycle. The fan may kick in to purge the cold air before the furnace engages, then the gas starts & the igniter is supposed to light the gas. A sensor is supposed to shut everything down if the igniter doesn't start, so you don't fill the place with gas.
