I’ll say this much, when it started as a small Youtube original from a studio best known for parody dubs of Halo deathmatches and other fan made materials, it was impressive. When it’s graded on the standards of an actual TV show, not so much. Let’s be honest, the best their animation has ever looked are the little bits of actual animation done for that one fighting game from Arc System Works.

Parody usually comments or makes fun of the material in question. Even if Star wasn’t as mean spirited as the first draft (where she was just an insane high school girl who thought she was a magical girl) there were a lot of tropes played for laughs, a lot of ideas poked at, etc. What is Black Clover poking at? What is it doing with its concepts? I mean, even Soul Eater had a more blatant parody with Black Star, a ninja that sucked at being a ninja and had wizard powers, like the protagonist of a Toonami show that may also get a live action adaptation.

Well remember, the original creator was shitcanned for being terrible and possibly embezzling funds from other projects.

So when’s Alternative?

It does prove all the acting talent in the world only does so much when the animation is 100% Rooster Teeth QUALITYtm.

The most recent addition to Gantz was a 3D CG movie in 2016 that was released in the US as a Netflix exclusive. It has a surprisingly active lifespan (helped by the author mentioning it in manga he did after it) even if right now the author is focusing on his current manga Gigant (which I expect to get an anime eventually. I mean Inuyakishi, his first post Gantz manga did).

The show is a pretty standard comedy about an introvert being made to do stuff by an extrovert and shenanigans ensue. Her big boobs offend people.

It lets them produce something the others aren’t and that’s important. A Shenmue anime feels like a mid 2000’s product though, sold at an FYE next to copies of Gungrave and Highlander: The Search for Vengeance. You can practically smell the mall Cinnabon.
