Well, looks like Toonami has been beaten to the punch by Netflix...again. If Chainsaw Man is Netflix bound as well, it’s going to be mostly those originals that were announced filling the schedule.

Demon Slayer winning an Oscar is the longest of long shots (9 times out of 10, the statue is already mailed to Disney as soon as the nominees are announced and Soul is prime Oscar bait) but considering the state of filmgoing right now, it's worth a shot, right? Right?

That was the culture, particularly the Adult Swim way of lording their "charity" over the average anime fan. Let's face it, anime fans and television channels have always a love/hate relationship to the days of censor-happy companies like 4Kids. Adult Swim could not provide uncensored anime, both because of Standards & Practices - And the people who were acquiring the shows were the tastemakers, so you had to watch what they wanted, which often times excluded shows with heavy content in favor of lighter faire. And if you didn't like it, tough shit weeb, ONLY GAME IN TOWN unless you wanted to hit the high seas or pay out the ass for overpriced DVD's. The ratings were their way of browbeating the fans and lording their choices and superiority over the average fan. They had the answers, not a lot of people liked this shit, and even less people would like the shit you wanted, So shut up and watch Kekkaishi. What, you thought we'd air Soul Eater or Gundam 00? We said shut up. SyFy didn't last, did it? Now everything's been turned on its head. The entire network is trying to find more hits in the vein of Rick and Morty, they're losing the rights to Family Guy, and most of the audience that was mocked and browbeaten by their monopoly bailed for streaming services to watch stuff they actually wanted. The culture they created has come back to bite them in the ass. Hard.

That was something Adult Swim threatened anime fans with constantly during the late 2000s. “Get on your unworthy knees and watch Kekkaishi because you don’t have a choice! We’re the only game in town and we will replace it with more Family Guy!” That threat is kind of toothless today.

I remember back in the day everyone said that Toonami's presentation and advertising were a key part of their success, but looking at these ratings...those days are long gone.

DeMarco doesn't like streaming. He has repeatedly gone on record saying such.

I would say that Toonami's ability to get conventional ratings peaked around Season 1 of OPM, and it was after that where streaming absolutely exploded into becoming the default method of consuming media for a lot of the country, especially anime and other types of prestige format television, which by definition tends to skew younger, towards a demographic that was more willing to embrace the technology and cast aside DeMarco's more old-fashioned way of thinking. It now is at the point where people want the material to come to them, rather than The success of Demon Slayer on Netflix has been my big example to go to. It was doing middling ratings for Toonami, then it airs on Netflix and becomes one of the most watched shows on the platform overnight. So much so I would bet Netflix is probably eyeing Mugen Train as soon as it's available. Same with One Piece. Gets cancelled after it does middling to bad ratings on Toonami, airs on Netflix, somehow becomes one of the most binged shows on the platform. DeMarco is an old fashioned TV man. Shows when he says, once a week, on his schedule. And people are not having it anymore.

FUNi is probably going to try to air the movie as a limited engagement like they did with the Goblin Slayer movie unless theaters are cleared for launch in enough time (doubtful). The alternative is someone pays out of the ass for the movie, and we know who has the money to do that -

After Season 1 did unexpectedly incredible business for Netflix, expect DeMarco to pick it up just to play keep away for a while even if its Toonami ratings were nothing to write home about.

The fact that we got this before Hollywood could get off their asses and make a Gundam film is kind of sad. That being said, if it ends up being better than Voltron Legendary Defender (an admitted low bar) I will laugh myself silly.
