10 Years Ago, Toonami was cancelled on CN...
Blatch replied to 3ngag3's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
There you go all making assumptions again. Who says Toonami's ratings are bad? The fact that we still gloss this point over when it's been pointed out probably dozens of times that Toonami still does well on Saturdays makes me think that we don't actually want to believe it, because things would be boring without something to complain about. I also think it's pointless to talk about the logistics of how shows get popular. Deadman Wonderland finished its first run on Toonami over six years ago, so of course it won't be popular now. Very few shows can hold for that long. On the other hand, regarding its peak, I don't think it was as popular as that of Yuri!!! on Ice. At least more and more people are coming around on Megalo Box. I hope this proves a lesson that we should be asking for shows for the block to air that are good, instead of rejecting what isn't the most popular. That's how shows which hardly anyone knew about like Michiko & Hatchin have become TV hits. -

YoI is a special case, as it attracted as large a crowd it did because of something other than the actual sports aspect. Free! is a similar case, although it's never really rose out of cult status. As for the others, Haikyu!! is at least popular enough to have been dubbed, but Kuroko's has never come out on home video in any form. Sports anime can be a crapshoot for anime licensors. For every show that manages to get IRL figure skaters talking, you get one like Big Windup!, which was an ignominious failure for Funimation when they tried releasing it. If you average all of them out, you'll generally get more unpopular shows than popular ones, unless we're dealing with boxing or martial arts. -
That's precisely why people love it so much. It (apparently) manages to squish the plot of a year-long mecha series into just 12 episodes, which makes it a triumphant example of how to competently direct and manage show composition. It could've been longer, but that's not the point. I'd much rather have it than the next Gundam show, owing to its uniqueness.

I mean, it ostensibly is advertising for the featured anime, but this is from a column that's been CR has been running for a while, and it gives equal time to a wide variety of shows. And this kind of thing is a perfectly normal part of business for any company that deals in anime simulcasts. It may be embellishment to an annoying degree (in some cases), but it's too far embedded within them for me to complain to a large extent.

KonoSuba! is probably never getting dubbed. I'm genuinely at a loss as to why a show can go almost three years to its premiere without Crunchyroll even sniffing it. Heck, maybe they somehow don't think it's as popular as it is. Either way, you're getting Planet With on Toonami, and you're going to like it, stupid.

They aren't. The first sentence even leans on the show's checkered reputation. Why do you have to be such a buzzkill?

He's some dude who retired last year. [as] aired the shows they did because he had the biggest hand in making them. You really could've looked somewhere else instead of asking, but I don't give a shit compared to Poke, so you won't get yelled at.

It feels like there aren't as many people who care about this one, at least compared to Progressive. Maybe they automatically assumed this one would suck because of the second season and are skipping it as a result? Al doesn't even mention this show in his signature, even though it's fresher than AoT S3. And he didn't even do Progressive when that was airing, instead opting for MHA. What gives, dude?

While I do agree with the central point (thanks, The Big Bang Theory), do you really have to go this far to try and slander the show? Why can't you just say that it isn't funny and move on? What have these two girls done to make you keep going on and on about how the show sucks and isn't funny? At least tomorrow marks the last episode, so we can continue talking about this into infinity.

Not really. I think they'll start running it again (from the beginning) after CN loses the extra hour. It's weird that they're doing Pete Smith Day again, and the schedule is fairly different. It's almost all BB, whereas last year's version had an equal split of Bob's and Brak. And next week, they're not running the former at all until Friday, leading to weird schedules with three episodes of American Dad! and Family Guy on different days. I wonder if there's actually a practical reason for doing it this time, which is a way to test a contingency plan for if they lose another Fox show.

The show is The Ancient Magus' Bride, which I need to finish already. -
[adult swim] loses the 8:00 hour starting on 10/1. I hope you're annoyed by the fact that Super's rerun won't get a proper conclusion.

You know... if Toonami is going to air another mecha series, it needs to be Planet With. People have been talking about this show as if it were the messiah. I'm only four episodes in, but I believe the hype.

It's cool that the writer is sticking to his guns, even being somewhat giddy at the controversy the first article caused. And, you know, I actually am starting to feel bad for Black Clover and its fans. Most of the critiques of it I've seen have little to do about the show itself, instead slamming it for what it isn't. So what if it's not this completely original masterwork? A show doesn't have to be that way for it to turn out at least good. I mean, look at Megalo Box! That show managed to do so much with a basic and time-tested plot that had been used many times before. Of course, superior direction is definitely what made that show into a candidate for the best show of the year, but it would've been palatable either way. I think there are many people who are bashing BC based on what they know of its bare basics. To them, Asta will forever be loud (although he's apparently improved in the sub), the plot will always be a rip-off of every better shonen series, and there won't be a point to watching it. They don't want to learn more about the show to correct these opinions because they don't care. I don't know if all the people saying that it gets better are correct, but I have enough faith in them to want to give the show another chance, and I think all the haters should entertain that idea as well. The only objectively wrong thing this dude seems to believe in is that the show is the best shonen to air in years. I suppose it might be up there, but what about My Hero Academia? That's the gold standard for such shows in this day and age, considering all the money it's made, the awards it's won, and the critics singing the show's praises at all opportunities. I wouldn't go this far.

I guess there's been some paranoia regarding the former source being shut down due to leaks. Therefore, we're not putting the direct links out in the open, but you can still view the enhanced backdoor.

Yeah, Al's wrong. I checked the backdoor schedule and saw it was normal.

HELLSING-WEEN 2018 (A Retrospective)
Blatch replied to OwlChemist81's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
You know, I think I'm just jaded. Your downright religious appreciation for Hellsing is somehow more annoying to me than anyone else's liking of a certain show, but I should stop with that. And on a similar note, using your favorite show for a tangent about the block, instead of stating it as "Toonami used to air like this, but now it's longer and starts earlier." That seems like the making of an insufferable genius... except when me or Poke says something like that. Then it's acceptable. But hey, I'm not meaning to hurt anyone. You can just give this post the "laughing" reaction and get back to whatever you're doing. Most of the problems are on me. -
More shows DeMarco wanted to get but couldn't due to reasons
Blatch replied to 3ngag3's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
That show apparently had a lot of raunchy humor, comedic gore, and even intense swearing. Plus, the final episode was intentionally made to be offensive to the point where it couldn't be aired on TV. Why the hell DeMarco thought he could air that in an afternoon cartoon block, I have no idea. -

If nobody minds, I'll just come in and take this.

I'm not totally convinced that Toonami should air another Gundam show. Both Unicorn and IBO were shrugged off by the Toonami audience; the former due to being obtuse and requiring knowledge of other Gundam shows to fully appreciate, and the latter because... well, it wasn't that good. And what is available that DeMarco might want to air? Thunderbolt, maybe? They would probably choose a full-length show over that one. There's also Reconguista in G, although that one seems to be polarizing, thanks to a nigh-incomprehensible plot. At this point, the only Gundam show I would accept them airing is G, and only because that one has a different tone than the others I think I'd like better. But what I really want Toonami to do is just air any original show that has no connections to anything they've aired before, because the block is in desperate need of that.

HELLSING-WEEN 2018 (A Retrospective)

This thread would be more interesting if it was about a rewatch of the show. I hate it when we do nothing but pointlessly rattle off facts. -
Do we really need to mention that again? In conclusion... who cares if there's an AnimeGate.
