flcl3 FLCL Alternative Episode 1 Discussion
Blatch replied to OwlChemist81's topic in Episode Discussion Archive
Uh... fuck. You'll see excerpted complaints threaded to the tweet. Basically, about the only things people liked from the screening were the new music from the pillows and a scene involving basketball. I wouldn't take this as a guarantee that the new season will be bad, if not worse than Progressive, but this isn't a good sign. -
For what it's worth, I'm really looking forward to the rest of DiU. Even despite the smaller scope of this part, the bar has definitely been raised regarding creative and/or epic fights, at least with the Jotaro and Josuke vs. Angelo encounter from two weeks ago. It managed to make quite a few epic moments out of the typical water-emitting utilities in a house. So what crazy shit did Araki manage to come up with next? It boggles the mind to wonder.

Wow... this thread certainly took a turn. And yet I think we're all the better for it.

If you thought Black Clover would end at episode 51...
Blatch replied to 3ngag3's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
Was there any good reason to post the entire top 50? But yeah, Black Clover is popular now. For better or worse, the campaign to make this show a genuine success has genuinely succeeded, and now the haters have to live with it. -
Western funded anime and how it will affect Toonami going forward
Blatch replied to Jman's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
The way I see it, Toonami will have to keep making originals if they want to stay afloat. This is a side effect of what the industry has become, as fewer anime are available to air on TV compared to ten years ago. They apparently have plans for stuff for about the next three years (mid-2021), and I'm sure they consist mostly of co-productions. It's just that we haven't heard about anything on the level of Samurai Jack S5 and the FLCL sequels since those were announced, which was a long time ago, and Alternative will be over and done with pretty soon. We can complain that Jason and friends aren't doing a good enough job of airing new anime, but that regards licensed shows they have to wrangle the TV rights for. I have no reason to be pessimistic about original content. -
Now that is a show I love seeing brought up again. People loved it upon release and thought it was wholesome as fuck... but, as with seemingly everything nowadays, it was forgotten in the deluge of new shows coming out, as well as because of the anime community's desire to accentuate the negative. Kemono Friends gets a new season... and another controversy.
Blatch replied to Blatch's topic in Anime & Manga
Well, they forced the seiyuus for the anime apologize for the creative team getting fired, and that was the end of it for a lot of people. The only reason why Kadokawa is going through with this is because, as I've alluded to, the show has become a genuine juggernaut over in Japan. It's caused tons of otaku to start getting out of the house and visiting zoos, which local establishments then milked for all that was worth. Remember the story of Grape-kun? And then you have that they made idol groups out of the show, including PPP, and those have become pretty popular. While I wouldn't be opposed to supporting this, the fact that I started watching the anime because it had a wholesome story that was undermined by the capitalistic goals of the rights holder. At this point, I'm waiting for any headlining seiyuu to voice a Cinderella Girls character (except Aya Uchida, obviously) so I can give them support that way. It's all very unfortunate and bad. The anime is not a direct adaption of the manga. The latter is more in line with the original mobile game, as it began while that was still in service. You can probably check it out if you watch the show and like it enough, but do be aware of what you're getting into. Look up the "Welcome to Japari Park" shorts on Nyaa to see what I'm talking about. And then you can stare at the footage in unbridled existential horror! -
After making a cheaply-animated Flash cartoon vaguely related to the franchise, Kadokawa went out and announced what everyone wanted all along: a new CG animal girls anime! The first trailer for it isn't too long, but it has animation that's more fluid and slightly more detailed compared to the first season. In other words, they're trying to emulate it as tastelessly as possible. But then a controversy broke involving a plagiarized audition script for aspiring seiyuus to use. The company in charge of this (as in, not Kadokawa) has since apologized, but I think this is an unnerving harbinger for the new anime's potential quality. People are already skeptical because the original creative team isn't involved here, but if you can't get what should be a non-issue like this right for what's become a huge media franchise in Japan in not even two years... well, that's a paddlin'. Watch this be a bigger disaster than High Guardian Spice.

This should've gone in the Toonami folder for maximum smarm.

Could *Insert shitty show here* be headed to Toonami?

Why? It has nowhere near the same level of nostalgia as its predecessor. Methinks you're scraping the bottom of the barrel with this one.- 396 replies

Well, it's either we support the show and its writer who thinks men are evil, or we side with the anti-SJWs who think that women are genuinely evil and want to commit violence against them... and also minorities. Considering that GamerGate and its associated crowds have lead to a mass profitileration of the alt-right, I'm not going to support any of their efforts to defame shows like this. But on the other hand, the actual product we're seeing is milquetoast enough that I'll just be ignorant rather than give it spite support. This is one of the few situations where I will support neutrality, even though the indifference in not taking a side has played a major part in our current hell timeline being created. I'm willing to bet that most people on Twitter have moved on from this, including a good chunk of the GG crowd. We should follow suit and put this one to bed, at least until it actually premieres.

pop team epic Pop Team Epic Episode #9 Discussion
Blatch replied to OwlChemist81's topic in Episode Discussion Archive
Why did you bump this thread to ask instead of looking it up yourself? -
All fictional works are inherently political. This is because they were shaped by the general views of the people who made them. It's impossible for something to not be political unless its creator had no opinions on anything to begin with, which is virtually impossible. Regarding Japan, they currently have a conservative government in power. Militarism has always been a part of Japanese culture, but this has become more prominent in recent years due to the Abe administration increasing the responsibilities of the JSDF. I don't know enough about their politics to formulate a conclusion about this, but I guess more people are afraid that Japan might go full bloodthirsty and join any country in kicking off World War III. The country definitely has certain problems regarding sexism, LGBTQ causes, and a myriad of other things, but there have been protests by activist groups challenging the bigotry. You don't hear about these much (of course, neither have I) because the anime news outlets stick to their namesake hobby, and not every single thing coming out of Japan.

Gundam IBO continuation may be in the works...
Blatch replied to OwlChemist81's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
NT is a theatrical film. As for Thunderbolt... well, you're the only person I've ever seen want it to be on Toonami, so I don't think it's going to happen. -
Since ratings talk hasn't been banned yet, I tried to post the chart directly to this thread, but I can't for the life of me get it to look good. What kind of black magic fuckery does Al have to use to make it show that way? Well, here's the link. My Hero Academia had a good rebound for its second week. I hope it's actually starting to grow an audience now that we've reached what's considered to be the great part.
-
I would argue that GamerGate is still very much alive. It's just twisted and transmogrified into different forms over the years, but the overall goal remains the same. Some of the people I've seen trash this new Crunchyroll show are at least GG-adjacent.

Rank the Toonami shows that aired this week!
Blatch replied to Blatch's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
Thanks to Sketch for keeping this thread alive. I completely ignored it after just one weekend because I didn't think my thoughts would be complete without the Lupin rerun. I'm now eight episodes behind on that show, so I have no hope of doing this competently at any point soon. Now, just as a scratch... My Hero Academia (Like I said... spider eagles.) Attack on Titan (That great animation was the only thing enabling my enjoyment of this one. When it ended, I lost all focus.) Attack on Titan rerun (And this one had none of it, so it's even further down.) -
Because of that, I think the rationale is that they want people who like the show already to tune into the rerun... except they probably already have alternate ways to watch, so this might as well be (and have been) pointless.
