It is. It's not something you get graded for. It's mostly there to make sure you're taking your time, and your advisor is always at least providing insight and comments to keep the work focused and solid. That being said, while MA and PhD friends are focused on academic work, mine's a creative thesis (a novel), so there are fundamental differences in how finished the work is expected to be.
