The Toonami Ratings Thread 1.0 :You are on a new board
brianycpht replied to StarPanda's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
Looks like the Jack rerun is just gone on March 18th, replaced by Bob's Burger's. It looks like they will also be KEEPING both of the Family Guys as well in the 10:00 PM hour. Bummer as I was hoping they will at least rerun the new Jack in that timeslot, but maybe they would like to see how it performs first. I also wished it would continue so Super would have something paired with it in the 8:00 PM hour. It's doing well in both timeslots. I still wonder how it would do if it was only at 11:30. http://adultswim.x10.mx/ -

I'm glad things are looking up this week. Things can only get better with Jack (I hope!). My only concern is that they've decided to drop an episode of Family Guy which could bring things down a little bit, but maybe not. I'm glad for this episode of Unicorn. My wife (who's still new to anime) and I so far haven't enjoyed this series as much as IBO because of the lack of character development. I get a little more out of it because I know UC Gundam and have explained as much as I could to help her understand it. I feel in order to grab the casual audience , you need to care about the characters or at least find them entertaining or funny. I think this is why shows like Inuyasha, SAO, FMA, KLK, and Aot do so well with large number of viewers. In the case of Jojo, I feel that many people saw the beginnings of part 1, didn't like it and never came back. Part 1 was dry in character development and lacked the humor of part 2 that makes Jojo so ridiculously entertaining. I made her stick it out and as a result she really enjoys what she's watching now. But it took me looking ahead a bit to see what was coming and telling her to wait. I really wish that Toonami would have done a separate promo for part 2 in order to let viewers who didn't like part 1 know it is something different.. But viewers may finally be catching on to it. I remember some people being down on IBO for being light on action some episodes, but it was those talky episodes that allowed us to get to know these people and be a little more attached to their outcome. Same thing with HXH, they've given us a reason to care about the main characters individual goals. So far, in this show, you just get dropped in the middle of a conflict over Laplace's box without really getting to know the characters and what they are all about. -
Probably a TOEi thing. It's nice that they're putting it out, I just wish they would put it out a little slower so Toonami can have it exclusively for awhile. Don't forget, the second the dvds come out, the dub goes out on pirate sites all over the internet and someone who wants to watch It can.

http://www.rightstufanime.com/Dragon-Ball-Z-Kai-The-Final-Chapters-Part-2-DVD This is crazy, they're going to have all of it out by the end of the summer. They'll be a year ahead of Toonami. I thought the had some deal where Toonami had to air it first before it gets released and that was what was holding it up. I wish they got to continue to have it as a dub premiere.

You are right on the money. I never get too worried about the total viewers or even the 18-49 ratings. I go straight to the 18-34, which I believe is AS's target demo. Remember those ratings ranking cards from years back, they always ranked them by 18-34. They probably do not want to say this publicly, but I think what they really care about is 12-34 viewers, particularly the male viewers. DBZ KAI actually did a 1.01 this week in that demo. They won't really go after the teenagers directly, but I believe they see value in the demo as future viewers. Look at the ads that they run, mostly fast food, video games, and action/comedy movies. These mostly seem to be for the young male demographic. I've noticed this year that the block has gone more male focused with the majority of its show shonen. If that's who they're going after, then they should be happy with the current ratings. -
One thing that's strange to me is that no where in the promos is Toonami mentioned. I know that they said it'll be inside Toonami, but I figured with such a huge series, they would want the Toonami brand front and center.

This is uncharted territory for the AS Toonami!. I have a feeling that the intent from here on out is to keep the 11:00 PM timeslot. I feel that Titan and FLCL will occupy the slots after Jack I also feel that at some point we may get back 3:30 as a slot to air shows that are free to them (Space Dandy, IGPX, etc....). The question is whether or not they can catch more of that casual Family Guy audience with Samurai Jack than with Super. I feel the 8:00 PM mandate for Super has sort of limited what it can do at 11:30. Hell, you might even get people to tune in for Jack that would never have interest in anime who might stick around for the rest of the block. Wouldn't it be something if Jack gets a weekday rerun if it does well? Many of their recent originals have gotten this. Its crazy to think that when March rolls around, Samurai Jack will be Adult Swims only premiering original series. Nothing else has been announced yet. Everything else they have premiering is licensed content, we have Supermansion in a promo deal with Crackle and sporadic week delay airings of new Family Guys (American Dad seems to be on hiatus and Bob's Burgers still hasn't aired anything from the current season).

Toonami's eventually going to get cancelled.

This is why I'm so grateful for Toonami. In its dying days, ASA really only had Bleach with consistent premieres. I remember the days when a show ended, it was not instantly replaced with something new (this is true for classic weekday Toonami as well) the next week. Things would get shifted around constantly going back and forth from starting at 11, then 12, then 1, then back to 12, to "Hey lets so all action" then the next week "Oh never mind lets put some comedy in there". Now we have always have a running block of 6-7 premieres (at least to television) with somewhat consistent ratings. One thing I read on Programming Insider every week is that AS as a whole is down in viewership from a year ago. This week it was 18% down from a year ago. If you take that into account, Toonami is really not doing bad at all, especially on night when Family Guy can't even crack 1.5 total viewers. Toonami does better on Saturday then most of their originals could do and additional FOX reruns aren't worth the cost on Saturday night, so I think the block is safe for a long while yet. Of course as we've seen before, business priorities change, but I think as long as Lazzo, Demarco, or Manning are at the network, we're in good shape! -
Toonami General Discussion Thread
brianycpht replied to ben0119's topic in Episode Discussion Archive
I def understand wanting to watch ahead! Last summer I discovered the show on Toonami and went back and started from episode 1 and got till 397 in about 2 months. The critical point for me was when I got to Luffy vs Rob Lucci in Enes Lobby, which is where Toonami was at. I just had to press on through Thriller Bark and the beggining of the next arc. I haven't gone beyond that because then I did the same thing with Naruto (started on OG episode 1 and am now current with the dub of Shippuden). I still record and rewatch the episodes (you actually get more out of them on a rewatch) on Toonami because I sort of feel like it needs to be there for people who have yet to discover the show. If not fot Toonami, I may have never watched them! -
I always kinda suspected they were going to do this due to the movie coming out. Since they own the show, it costs them nothing to air this and ratings won't be too much of a concern, but I still think it might grab some people who haven't seen it before/ want to see it again. Funny I LITERALLY just watched both seasons last month! Second time this has happened, first time was with Champloo last year! I firmly believe that the block will get 11:00 PM for Jack and Titan (the only way that doesn't show up is if FUNimation isn't offering it and wants it to stream it themselves). Then later in the year, there's going to be FLCL and I believe they've already stated they'd like to rerun the first one before the second one shows up. It's entirely possible that at some point this year (may not last forever depending on the need), Toonami may run the full 11:00 PM to 4:00 AM. Jason hinted at the possibility of a few shorter shows coming to the block as well and I just don't see them able to do these things unless they expand further. Jojo could also take a break before going into Stardust Crusaders (in fact that's what Jason thinks they are probably going to do as stated on his now defunct Ask.Fm). I like the idea of other nights as well if they feel its worth their while. I think we are in an era where Toonami will be whatever the situation demands of the current show slate. Of course, the numbers will guide the way and adjustments will be made to ensure the block's survival. As long as Demarco, Lazzo, and Manning are around, I have a feeling so will Toonami!

One thing that I can credit this incarnation of Toonami is that they have never straight up pulled a low performer like in the CN days. They just move it until the ratings match expectations for a timeslot .At least no one is left hanging mid run during a premiere show!

This doesn't seem so bad considering Adult Swim is way down overall from last year. That 11:30 Family Guy only tops out at 1.5 million lately even on weeknights. I think Toonami is keeping pace rather well all things considered!
