OwlChemist81
Here's the Collider article: https://collider.com/rick-and-morty-anime-trailer/?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAR2hh_caYUeN27OrpqTlAu0muMIDbCIuwgtBoNrKPf7jnTL9PmQolDmE4OI_aem_DIV2F2Zl2eKaocBKTnIGPQ WTF!? Starting Toonami with a SUBTITLED R&M at Midnight!? Never thought I'd see the day. Bold strategy, but I guess it COULD pay off, especially if the encore of the dub winds up at 3 AM, or perhaps earlier leading the reruns. Sketch
It will not pay off. This will be a disaster or at least it would be if the ratings could get much lower. The dub and (probably) sub will be on Max on Friday so this might not even be premiere for the sub. Programming and/or DeMarco are off their rocker if they think this was the best way to air this show that is already a hard sell to Toonami viewers and Rick & Morty fans. And maybe WBD don’t even have much faith in it given they cheaped out on the dub and didn’t even use the current Rick & Morty voices. Needed the extra scratch for the pointless promotion tour I guess.

We could see high end 130-140k numbers, or if it really turns people off we might even see double digits at midnight. Especially if there are no acquired shows to go along with this. One Piece and Naruto aren’t worth sitting through a bad subbed show. I’d even argue Demon Slayer alone probably isn’t enough to salvage this since so many people watched ahead.

Jman
New dub trailer.
naraku360
Did they watch the show and think Rick is supposed to be a good grandpa or did they just not watch the show? I haven't even really liked Rick and Morty since the first season, and this feels like something that should be its own thing.

The previous specials have this particular Rick playing the part of grumpy patriarch more than abusive drunk. He’s still Rick but is a bit more sympathetic than American Rick. What's the point of using R&M if they're just doing the DC × RWBY shit?

For example, we see Jerry in his orb power suit from the Pissmaster episode. Likely just to give Jerry a place in the action. There isn’t a point. It’s a popular title and making popular title into DA ANNIE-MAY is the hot meme right now.
naraku360
I keep returning to this when realistically I should be checking out Uzumaki instead. As a so bad it's good connoisseur, this is more fascinating than it qualifies as reaching that coverted title. You had a terrible idea to draw in new viewers with an anime that demands context, but within that context is also incoherent, dumb, and barely resembles what fans would want. People complain about the art, yet that's the least of it's issues. Even in continuity with the source, these characters can't seem to land on how they feel about Rick. It's always laced with praise for his reliability, yet by this point in the show..... they all fucking hate Rick. It doesn't work independently, and it doesn't work as a bigger whole. At this point, I'm only watching to see the exponential build up of failures, and frankly, I don't know if I can manage when the show manages to be dangerously boring despite all the intriguing peculiarities.
rpgamer
Mighty Boosh put it best: "Elements of the past and the future, combinin', to make something not quite as good as either." There may have been potential in the idea at some point.. but the writing is so far removed from the source material that it may as well be bad fanfiction. Top Gun
I consider myself to be a reasonably intelligent person. I've watched plenty of good mindfuck shows and had a blast trying to piece together what's going on and what will happen next. But it's hard to think of another series I've seen that's as perpexingly, willfully incoherent as this one. I said it elsewhere here, but on a moment-to-moment basis I've often found it impossible to figure out how each scene connects with each other. Which version of Rick is that? Are we in an alternate universe? A flashback? A flash-forward? Is this just going on in that VR helmet Morty was wearing? When was his waifu an alien, and when did she look human? Who knows! I keep thinking at some point that it'll try to tie some of this disparate nonsense together, and a couple of episodes ago it almost seemed like it was trying to, but nope it went straight back to the plot puree again. I figured going in that I'd be at a bit of a disadvantage due to never having watched the original series before, but not only does it seem like it's relying on some super-deep cuts from that (which is an odd choice if you're trying to chase a new audience), but that even if you are super-familiar with the original it still makes no sense. So...who is this for exactly?

So...who is this for exactly? To put it as delicately as I can, this is strictly to make the suits happy enough to keep the lights on at Williams Street. About as corporate a decision as most pre-90s cartoons, actually.

So...who is this for exactly? There are quite a few of these, but none of them seem relevant at all to the plot. They are just there so people who do watch the show can say “oh haha yes that’s a reference”. It must truly be baffling to newcomers when they see Mr Nimbus appear, for no real narrative reason at all besides being a character the fans like, and then mention he controls the police with no other context. Watch the actual show? You get it right away. It’s a silly joke that he inexplicably can control the police and no one will explain why or how. Apparently the guy who is working on this is a huge R&M fan. Perhaps the biggest in Japan. So all these little nods and references are just him flexing his knowledge. As well as using his position to fix things the fanbase didn’t like, such as poorly using Cronenberg Jerry. The other half of the show is whatever this time nonsense story is which probably won’t ever make sense. So who is this for? The creator. He got a free pass to make his fanfiction of his favorite show real. A dream many have, and few will achieve. But, just because you are in the industry doesn’t mean your fanfiction isn’t shitty drivel.
PokeNirvash
Nice to know that not picking this show up has proven to be the smartest thing I've done this year.
