Space Ghost comic from Dynamite tries to make him a serious character again.

This is the third such attempt in the new millennium to make a serious Space Ghost story, although the first two were from DC, a GrimDark 2006 release with beautiful Alex Ross covers and a really edgy story, and Future Quest, a massive crossover between all the Hanna Barbera action characters in the hopes of treating then seriously.  (Dynamite earlier in the month released a Thundercats comic).  The problem is Space Ghost is kind of typecast as well…this.

He is apparently not in the best of health though, I don’t think he will return to voice work.

George has not been publicly heard from in over a year and all you can really do is hope he’s still recovering from the surgery.

A new trailer hit, which seems to confirm the villain of the first issue is Brak of all people, heavily redesigned from his Brak Show days.

Naturally though, some people are upset at the Space Ghost not being Tad Ghostal.

Article headlines are pure douche chills (and the author needs to lose the peach fuzz) but it’s a comic. People are gonna like the art.

Saleswise, Space Ghost is off to a strong start, #13 on the top 50 comics sold last month, directly behind Cobra Commander.

The comic has been selling pretty well with Issue #3 out today.  After Brak in the first issue, the next two focused on characters not seen in Space Ghost Coast 2 Coast that much, a space monster in Issue 2 and Black Widow (not that one) in Issue 3.  

Next month is going to be interesting though, since the preview is for the rebooted Zorak.

I hope this bodes well for their take on Jonny Quest. If Space Ghost can break the chains of Williams Street, so can he.

Issue #4 just hit physical and digital shelves today, and it remains a very good comic that leans into its retro-futuristic angle (Space Ghost saying "blast it" instead of "damn it" feels like something done to keep the vibe of the old show) while not being afraid to show Zorak rather gruesomely gut guards in the prison he escaped from.  

Anyway, as befitting Zorak, his first appearance is a two parter...to be continued next month.  If you like classic HB action cartoons or pulpy space adventures, this is worth a read.

I think you need to hit Issue #12 (one year's worth of books) before talking adaptation, but yeah, this is pretty good.  if Toonami still exists this time next year, they could shop this comic around to studios and potentially have a hit action cartoon that indulges in a pulp aesthetic not used a lot these days.

Next issue meanwhile, has Robo Corp bringing in their best agent, Moltar.  Yup, Moltar gets to be serious now.

I'd like to see that happen, but it would be more likely that Warner Bros. Animation would do that.

The new issue has done nothing to dissuade me from the idea that a serious Space Ghost cartoon with the right crew would actually kind of rock.
