anyone here from Minnesota?

not looking to get into a big conversation over the most recent incident of police violence, but I have a question if you live or have lived in Minnesota.

every article I've read so far has mentioned that Daunte Wright was pulled over because he had an air freshener dangling from his review mirror.

this is evidently illegal in Minnesota.

um... why?

I've lived in five different states and I've never heard of such a law.

not trying to be difficult here. (no really) but can anyone explain what the logic is behind this one, because I can't think of a single good reason for such a law to exist other than to provide the police with a pretext to pull people over whenever they feel like it.

also apologies if this belongs in whatever we're calling babbling these days.

I heard that it was supposed to be some obstruction of the rear view mirror or some bullshit I think.

The point is, really, that a man lost his life over nothing.

People will look into his life and he will be labeled a piece of shit and that he was rightfully killed, some fund will be set up for the cop who "accidentally" shot the guy, and everyone walks away Scott free

It's the sort of law designed to give police justification to pull anyone over arbitrarily. Something that also lets them say "what odor are you trying to cover up? We're going to search your vehicle for drugs now, too." Of course it's a bs law. That's the point. Lets them get away with profiling without explicitly profiling.

the odor excuse never occurred to me.

yeah, they would totally use that for justification.
