just got back the approval from the state for the assumed name adoption. now that we officially own rights to it, i can start dropping it about, and i can post up the logo as well.

hopgarden.thumb.png.cb8b41ea809561bfc76824e36bc5d701.png

i just created this logo over the weekend. i like it because it's a derivative of our original sportsman's logo. we've used derivatives of that original logo several times for different events or holidays or whatever, so this kinda gives the impression to those familiar with our brand, that the hop garden is also a part of the sportsman's universe, so to speak, while also being a different entity. we chose "hop garden" because, while it's effectively a beer garden, we didn't want to give people the impression that it's some cheap concrete slab with a string of xmas lights and no character (like most beer gardens tend to be around here). it's more than that. we're actually growing hops (primarily as decor but also possibly to harvest and use/sell) and installing lots of living green stuff around. there's going to be spaces for horseshoe pits, live music, seating for about 100, and a full bar with a focus on craft beer (the word "hop" kinda implies that). we'll still have domestics and mixed cocktails, and there will be screens for watching sports or whatever. maybe even a 16' projection screen for evening baseball games.

now that the name and address are finalized and rights are secured, we're going to begin installing utilities, followed by concrete, buildings (restrooms and bar area), and recreational stuff. my last task (besides decoration and lighting) will be to build the cooler and draft system. looking at 8-12 taps to start, in a custom-built walk-in cooler, that will pour crafts as well as (hopefully) some signature cocktails...if i can figure out how to pull that one off.

anyways, i can finally stop calling it "the venue" when talking to people. and that makes it feel a bit more official. muy bueno.

i love the idea about growing hops in the space.

the building before the last building (the one that was actually sold, but the realtor was an idiot)

the space next to it needed to come down, and i was going to do a garden/green house type of thing.

i love the logo. and honestly hope i get an opportunity to visit your venue.

thanks! i usually make a logo and then stare at it for a week, tweak it here and there, and eventually settle on it and move on with life. i can already see the first edit coming along for it too. the hop cones need to be a bit smaller and/or the leaves larger. there's a balance that's not quite right from top to bottom.

i've grown hops at home with limited success, and since these new ones will be primarily for decoration, i'm not concerned with keeping them in a top hop production state. might just let them grow unkept for the first year, to see how crazy they get.

snip the tips. :)

depending on how you want them to get. and how bushy.

looks like your leaves could be just ever so slightly fatter.

yeah, i agree. after the original draw, i made them about 10% larger and shrank the cones by the same and i thought that was good enough. now after looking at it for a couple days, i think they need to go a bit more. the leaves are probably 2" across and 3" long on average, but the cones are less than 1" long for the most part (some varieties are longer, but size isn't everything right?). the last couple leaves before the cluster of hop cones are generally smaller, like in your pic, but not always.

conclusion: need bigger leaves. yup.

So... Does this mean new testicle festival shirts?

the testicle festival is no more...at least not for now. we decided 2017 would be the last year because the weather always managed to destroy shit. and on that last year, high wind and heavy rain flattened tents and dumped porta potties, basically destroyed the entire event, right when it should have been at its largest point. as i was standing in pools of blue shitwater, trying to upright the potties at 10pm after the rain let up, that's when i knew for sure we made the right call to end it. storms knocked us out on 4 of the last 6 years, even to the point where we lost about $10k on the last one.

i still have a couple shirts left from the "farewell festival" print run though. not sure on sizes but i can check. this was probably my favorite shirt because it can be taken two ways: "farewell, testicle festival" or "farewell, testicle" festival.

the fun has begun. met with the plumber today, and we have a plan for getting his part underway. now that the frost has gone, the part of the lot that was not already concrete, is getting cleaned up and graveled this weekend. meeting with the concrete guys next week, hopefully they can get in and pour footings quickly so we can run the plumbing in right after that. then finish the concrete and start with the structures. happydance.gif

i just had a notification pop up on my phone. been price watching a particular picnic table for almost a year now. it generally runs in the $200-300 range. it went on sale this afternoon for $153, so i ordered 8 of them. if we like them as much as i expect we will, we might by buying up to 8 more. next lumber sale that comes up from any of the local hardware/big box stores, we'll be pouncing on that as well. it's getting exciting now.

plumber came in real high...like double my personal estimate...so we're getting a couple more quotes. accepted a bid for concrete this morning. it's also higher than my estimate, but only because he's doing considerably more work than i recognized as necessary. i'd like to toss maybe $15k at these two parts and be done with them, and that's still looking possible. then we should have +/-$12k left to build the bar and restroom.

primary electrical should be going in this week, and hopefully hooked into grid next week. then it's off to the races. we're still on track for a june soft open. it's gonna be tight, but i think we can do it.

got another plumber coming in tomorrow morning. i had to sit down tonight and slap together some "blueprints" for them to get an idea of our plan. this is like, v.14 at this point, but i'm feeling pretty good about it. made the utility closet and walk-in cooler a bit larger than previous versions, mostly to simplify and reduce materials costs (that actually makes sense, you'll just have to trust me on this one). moving on...electrical has been difficult, but utility company added their drop last week and i'm supposed to get a meter and panel installed tomorrow. at that point, we'll finally have local power to operate tools and whatnot. then if the plumber isn't wicked high, we'll be getting started on that phase as early as 4/22. contractor is scheduled to fire back up around the same time, so hopefully i can put him to work building out the rest of the stage while plumbing/concrete is dropped in. then we should be able to start on bar/rr structures around 4/29.

in the meantime, i had to have new air conditioning installed in the bar because the old one died the full death. it was only like 29 years old, so it had a good run. took the installers one day to remove the old air handler and outdoor unit, and replace with new. thought about going with dual stage, but we don't have the cash to toss at that while working on the hop garden. so we opted for a single stage 5-ton unit instead. there goes another $5000, ugh.

anyways, a snapshot of the layout i put together for the plumber:

thank you! this was my favorite logo design for all the festival media i did over the years. partly because of the double entendre, but also because it was the simplest to draw. and i'm a bit of a fan of old western tv programs, so this trope was fun and fitting.
