Why does the sidewalk coming from your front door go past the actual sidewalk and onto the road?

My brother's 1906 house has that, along with the original curb and brick gutter.  No idea what the exact purpose is, but, I suspect it would have made sense for curbside carriage or early automobile to have an access across the parkway (easement with trees between the curb and sidewalk).  The house does not have a front facing driveway; the garage is off an alley in the back and isn't even original to the house.

wouldn’t that be a fucking corner curb?

Even pre-automobile, it was difficult to cross streets in the middle of blocks because the curbs were far deeper.  Most of the century or older side streets in Los Angeles existed before there was a comprehensive storm water system, so stepping off the curb could be stepping into a river.
