fuggstop Posted August 15, 2018 Posted August 15, 2018 She doesn't seem to have any psychological symptoms. Def happier than i was as a kid. But if she is bipolar..she wont have to go thru all the trial and error i went thru with meds and will be treated asap. Isn't science great? The test also tells you about any other problems you need to look out for. Some insurance even pay for it!
SwimModSponges Posted August 15, 2018 Posted August 15, 2018 They ship your information to the government, who then claims ownership over your genetic makeup. 1 2

SwimModSponges Posted August 15, 2018 Posted August 15, 2018 you laugh, but it's true- if the government patents your genetic makeup they own you.
mthor Posted August 15, 2018 Posted August 15, 2018 Is there actually a test for it available? Most of what I can find in the literature is experimental. The genetic testing seems so far to be more accurate for determining med regimens once one has been diagnosed rather than providing the actual diagnosis, let alone diagnosing it in someone who's asymptomatic. 1

Phillies Posted August 15, 2018 Posted August 15, 2018 on a more serious note they don't have that type of genetic testing currently available.

There is a liver dna test which shows which meds your liver might like or hate- and its currently not recognized by all of the medical community. It cost 300$ .

There is no "gene" for bipolar or any other mental illness. It's possible to have a genetic predisposition to mental illness because they do tend to run families but that certainly doesn't mean someone is doomed to have bipolar or schizophrenia or whatever just because their parents do. 2 1

The rule of thumb is that if one of one's parents has it, one is 25% more likely than the average to get it. If both of one's parents have it, then one is 50% more likely to develop it. If one's identical twin develops it, then one is fucked, since the probability is 80% higher than that of the general population. 1

I think thats already proven.

It can tell which meds to avoid and a few parts of the test are more specif insofar as what meds a person might take, however its limited. Def worth the $300.

lupin_bebop Posted August 16, 2018 Posted August 16, 2018 SIGH. You can't GENETICALLY test for Bipolarism in kids. Dumbass.
