Or eat shit and die.  Like is it a series of inevitible events, or is it an imperative used on someone who has pissed you off.

I'm sure it can be both but I'm curious to it's original intent.

I've always used it after someone pissed me off. Sometimes its just eat shit. Other times it's eat shit and die.

Its a demand that the person literally consumes faeces and then expires.

If it were "eat, shit, and die," an apt response would be something like "yep, another day another dollar. Well hang in there, its almost friday," as opposed to the "yeah well fuck you too buddy" that the comment generally draws as a reaction.

Additionally "eat shit" can ive heard be a euphemism for crashing: "i was going down this really steep trail on my mountain bike when i hit a lose rock and totally ate shit."

It's to tell them to eat shit, and also die.

"Eat, shit, and die" sounds like a poster a philosophy major would have in their dorm to explain our essentialist dilemma of being humans built to consume and decay.
