Surgery on my knee. I'm terrified.

My insurance will cover about 75% of it, but regardless, I've apparently been dealing with a small crack in my knee over the course of four years that has been worsening over time.

It began back in 2014, when I was just out of college (for the first time). I felt slight pains in my right knee. Went to the doc and they did some x-rays. They need to fix it up now before it gets worse, or they may need to replace the entire thing.

UGH. I don't want to be driven around. I'm about to graduate with a more useful degree in a month. I DON'T need this bullshit. I'm 27 years old, almost 28. I thought only older people went through this?

Your first surgical procedure is always something that touches you and gives you a sense of your mortality.  I was freaking out when I had to get a titanium peg put in my jaw bone for a dental implant.  The anticipation is always worse than the actual procedure.  And I say that having been completely awake and aware for my surgeon using a torque wrench on my jaw bone.

Honestly it sounds like the most painful part will be the bill.

The dumbest part is that this isn't even my first surgical procedure. I've needed a thyroid gland removed from my throat.

My worry is that after this, I'll never be able to walk normally again. I know I shouldn't think that way, but I am a pessimist at heart when it comes to medical stuff....pertaining to myself, that is.

whats so bad about being driven around? why are you terrified?

I'm an EMT. I pick people up and carry them around. Naturally, if I have a bad knee, that's bad news bears. I would prefer to have a job at the end of the day.

I'm going to be using vacation days for this crap, even though everyone in the office has been supportive so far. I've been sick TWICE this year. Once with the flu, and again with strep throat. I have no more sick days.

But the pain in my knee is killing me. I need to get this done.

I very much doubt that's the case.  As far as surgery is go knee surgery is about as routine as these things get.  I suspect you'll be tender for a time after the ordeal but long-term you'll be in much less pain.

Well at least it’s not a kneecap replacement right?

my uncle tommy lost his leg to that surgery....well...it was also because the doctor was a damn quack but....eh

The kicker is that they say my knee should be pretty much shot at this point. So if this surgery doesn't hold up over the years, I may need my knee cap to be replaced.

Right now I'm just freaking out about what could go wrong. Oddly I'm calm during my job, but when I'm in deep shit, I panic like this. A lot. More than I'm proud to admit.

I've had about 20 surgeries from when I was 1 to around 16. All of them for things on my legs, knees and hips. I've had to relearn how to walk more times than I can remember.

What you have to get doesn't sound so bad, and the more you wait the worse it's going to be. So do it already.

The old guy at work had both his knees replaced. Im sure the intial recovery is a bitch but hes walking straighter than ever. Anxiety before surgery is normal. Doctors and nurses in general gives me really bad anxiety just for routine stuff. The smell of clinic antiseptic sends my heart racing. I didnt know how i was going to make it through my cesarean being completely awake and aware ... but that spinal tap and being so fucking done with contractions made everything cool.

knee replacement is routine at this point.  It's probably abnormal for someone under 30, but knee surgery "in general", which encompasses several procedures, for injury for people under 30 is pretty common, i.e. sports injuries, fucking around, etc

you'll be fine

i mean, any of us could die at any moment from undiagnosed heart disease, or from brain anuerism
