  1. See, I don't get this. What guacamole bowl hasn't been puked in at one time or another? Now it isn't just a bowl of guac vomit, it's a bowl of mystery.
  2. It seems like trauma is indeed the catalyst for very early memories. I recall watching parts of Reagan's nomination speech which would be ... 4-1/2? Don't remember the specifics of the speech obviously, just the fact that his face was there on the Sony.
  3. It is really good. I suppose it doesn't get a lot of attention because it is kind of bleak, which doesn't always lend itself well to nostalgia.
  4. Buddy covered that. It’s going to be an unbalanced relationship because they’re in two different places in their development, and that would inevitably lead to the older of the two harboring unmet needs. These relationships are never on equal footing, which is where the creepiness comes in.
  5. I’m not going to comment on depravity since the most I’ve actually seen beyond reports of an investigation is the screengrab you posted. I think it’s still comparable to Elvis and Priscilla in the sense that typical power dynamics don’t always apply in non sexual relationships, so there’s certainly room for this to be not abusive. But, if they did have sex, it’s pretty clear cut abuse regardless of consent.
  6. That makes him no different than just about any other celebrity. To be perfectly clear, none of us is truly likable when all of our flaws are fully exposed and that is actually a good thing. We don't exist so that people will like us, we exist where people will like us even when we aren't likable. You don't want to confuse Musk's inability to be liked, whatever the underlying insecurity fueling that desire, with his more problematic personality flaws - namely his abusive tendencies to those close to him or in his employ. We're discussing him not because he's unlikable but because his actions harm people and need to be spotlighted. As puerile as his antics are, its that abusiveness that prevents him from being relatable person.
  7. That’s a cop out and it’s a stupid thing to say. There’s a reason why the state mental institutions were shut down in the 70s and 80’s: we were incarcerating people for being mentally ill without actually helping them heal. Decades later we’re still discovering new forms of mental impairment and we haven’t developed any new effective treatments. It goes without saying that neurology deals with far more internal and external variables than any other human physiological process. The reality is that gun ownership needs to be heavily restricted. It’s not because guns are inherently bad. It’s not because gun owners can’t be responsible. It’s because we have no effective way of determining what situations and when a responsible gun owner can’t be responsible. The only people truly interested in solving the issue understand that the only solution involves curtailing rights.
  8. Well, he isn’t just awkward but that’s mostly beside the point. There are plenty of awful people who aren’t quite as unlikeable as Musk because they know how to read the audience. Awkwardness doesn’t contribute to one’s dislikability, but it also doesn’t disguise it.
  9. Not to give him undue cover, but a lot of his likability issue is related to his inability to read social cues.
  10. That's great, but it doesn't do anything about mass shootings which are also a very popular issue with the electorate.
  11. Daryl Hall has always been kind of an arrogant prick.
  12. In just about every sport, fans have ruined the game watching experience. I've been really fortunate to attend some championship games and its hard enough to go through the emotions of dread, dejection then absolute jubilation when we win - having to deal with opposing fans that think it's ok to harass and abuse you really ruins the experience. Although this isn't an NFL thing, it's all the worse when you're in a uniform and you're performing during the game and fans think you're fair game.
  13. There’s a reason I don’t do arson anymore, and it got nothing to do with that guy.
  14. I can't possibly fathom what it would be. We're nowhere near the point where AI can be autonomous, so it must be something a government agency can use on unsuspecting citizens.
  15. I'm pretty sure that was the impetus for the first post in weeks even if indirectly, and in particular, Icarus' response. The typical denials that come with the rationale behind the firing muddy things a bit, but eat idea that the board may be afraid of what ever nuclear invention OpenAI came up with and immediately hid adds a menacing subtext to this AI debate.
  16. You don't think search engines are unnecessary?
  17. Only if I’m blackmailing the dude … is the correct answer.
  18. Nice.
  19. I agree, of course, but part of the problem is that Chik-fil-A is one of the few places that is omnipresent and will actually cater events for cheap (as in cheaper than actually paying for a caterer who pays proper wages). There is also the fact that a lot of these chicken chains are based in the South, and that brings about its own set of ethical quanderies.
  20. I don't really think that's the case. Yes, tech startups are investing heavily in R&D and they are putting out a lot of flashy "research" to con both investors and consumers. We aren't at the inflection point where lab research is being overtaken by corporate research, though; we're still at a place where comparatively rudimentary machine learning is being expanded while the difficult and all-important development of machine thought is still in its infancy. We can't pretend that the end goal is artificial intelligence reaching sentience in a science horror apocalyptic fashion - it has always been to seamlessly augment human intelligence. What these corporate researchers are doing is little more than accentuating the novelty aspects of AI.
  21. Festive. Can you drive on the freeway with all that, though?
  22. You too Ghosty. Say hi to your sister for me.
