In nyc at least servers make $15 an hr allegedly. I say allegedly because it’s real convoluted the conditions where the owner actually pays it and I do believe they can include up to a certain amount in tips towards that $15 an hr wage. So essentially, in nyc, service industry workers pay their own salary

Yeah a lot of places have it where a percentage of tips go to the back. Some places don’t allow you to go home with your tips. You have to pool the tips and you get your share at the end of the week. Real scumbag stuff that’s why I NEVER leave tip on credit card. Cash only so the server can do whatever they want with it.

No never have I not left a tip even if I got less than great service it might not be a 20% tip but I will leave 15% at a minimum. We all have bad days. I can’t see not tipping at all. The server would have had to smack me in the face with a plate for me to not leave a tip

I hate tipping though because a lot of scumbags steal tips to pay the workers they have off the books and I don’t understand how in every other universe if you don’t have the money, it’s don’t get the thing, except in the service industry. You can underpay your workers and guilt your customers into paying the salary that the owner should be fuckin paying. No one says they shouldn’t open that business it’s always “if you can’t afford to tip at least 18% don’t go out” not “pay your fuckin workers or don’t open that restaurant”
