I've seen this happen several times and it's been a legal shot every time. The ref tells you in the rules meeting before the fight that only he/she or the bell can stop the fight. Even when a towel's been thrown the ref has to stop it (he can decide to let it continue). If you feel you've had enough, take a knee or wave it off and let the ref recognize the bout's end...
