I know it's a far cry from a pistol but pepper spray is legal to own in all states and most lower-level jurisdictions. You might be able to get a taser but I don't know whether or not you need a permit.

truth be told it wasn't that bad but it was expensive I had a meal plan my freshman year and I ate a lot of cafeteria food since there was no point wasting my personal money if my food was already paid for. Figuring out what to avoid by trying it first was the worst part.
