Golden age of content isn’t over, yet Adult Swim doesn’t have a damn thing announced to fill in all the gaps from the shows cancelled this year. Maybe AS just isn’t part of that golden age? The results of this in a few years will be interesting. There are only 2 possible outcomes. Either Zaslav ends up looking like a hero who made countless tough choices to save the business, this will cement his legacy as a master businessman, or everything continues to crash to an irreparable state and Zaslav will be seen as pure toxin to put in charge of anything.

Got accused of being a groomer cause of some weird sketch she did in the past. Interestingly, the accusers completely dropped their case after a few weeks. But it just goes to show how destructive a claim like that can be, I heard a ton about the allegation when it broke, I heard zero about it being dropped. Personally I think T&B was doomed regardless, so I doubt this ended up being much, if any factor in the choice to cancel the show.
-
Even before the controversy, I had a feeling this was going to happen. It seems like this year every new season that airs of a show is followed by an announcement it was cancelled a few months later. The only safe one is Rick and Morty. What is even going to be left of AS for next year? The way things are going it feels like there will be months long gaps between single new shows.

This time around hasn’t been performing that bad surprisingly. Either the upgraded pace or the simple fact the block has been airing stuff the fans like even less, it hasn’t been like pre 2017 where almost every night it was the clear problem show. With that in mind and the fact content is hard to come by anyway, I can’t see a reason they would want to drop it again. Toei was the one desperate to have it on the air, so I don’t see why they would pull out either. Unless they don’t believe 150k or so viewers per week is good enough exposure to keep the deal going.
-
Problem is, most of them don’t. Toei and TMS are prime examples of leadership that is stuck way in the past. Toei in particular has always been desperate to make One Piece popular in the west, going back as far as dumping it on 4kids without a second thought. Most other studios aren’t even thinking about what a series does outside of Japan, let alone how it performs in the middle of the night on a Saturday. The One Piece news is the most unusual thing about this new schedule. It has been on 2x speed for almost the entire year, maybe that wasn’t the actual plan and they are running dry on episodes? If so, I’d hope in the new year they replenish their episode pool and drop the rerun to get it back to 2x. Because Dressrosa at 1 episode a week could be listed as a war crime.

I really doubt they would start the MHA rerun 23 episodes deep if they didn’t have SOMETHING like 90% certain that they could park in the midnight slot next month. Going back to MHA at all is a strong pointer towards S6, but there’s also no telling how deep the CR funny business goes and it’s just there to keep the spot warm for Bleach. We will find out in the coming weeks what’s going on there, but it’s obvious set up for something. We have no need to think about schedule filler anymore considering they chopped off the rerun portion. If they would have stuck with 2x One Piece, we may have seen a block that is straight premiers in December. I do agree they need to be more open to less popular shows, especially going into next year. Even if they pull off MHA, that won’t mean they can pull that off with every popular show they have aired in the past. They need to patch up some of the gaps with B tier shows from Sentai.

To me, it seems like the prices would be fairly equivalent. Bleach is high because it’s the biggest deal of 2022, and MHA is high because Crunchyroll are dicks. Either way they go, the wallet will hurt. But, that shouldn’t be a huge deal since we are quickly approaching the January reset. Of course, that assumes Zaslav sees fit to give the block any budget next year. The problem with rights is very rarely are broadcast rights a separate deal in this day and age. And even if they were, Toonami needs the stream rights anyway. The block could probably do a lot more if it was only dealing with broadcast rights, but that would mean our only audience would be cable viewers, and we have seen the trend those numbers have been taking, both on Toonami itself and cable in general.
-
That’s exactly what I was thinking. In my eyes, Bleach still has a better chance than S6. The elephant in the room is obviously, why rerun MHA then? And I’d say two reasons, one they have a habit of parking a show in its intended slot and never moving it, so MiA S2 is not meant to leave 12:30. Secondly, the only real option for a lead otherwise is Yashahime, and we have all seen the ratings that has been pulling. At the end of the day, MHA S6 or Bleach doesn’t matter, either would be a slam dunk pickup for the block.

https://twitter.com/swimpedia/status/1585840501546438656?cxt=HHwWgMDS0ZbihIIsAAAA Check this out, looks like MHA is NOT starting at the first episode of the season, but rather episode 23. That changes everything. I don’t want to raise the S6 flag just yet, but this is clearly not meant to be permanent. Which begs the question, why didn’t Demarco clearly articulate this to the fans yesterday? Why didn’t the Facebook post clearly state it’s a late season episode? Two simple changes could have completely flipped the reactions to yesterday’s schedule drop. But they instead opted for vagueness which forced everyone to assume the worst. Also, if it holds into the following week, looks like Jack and Black Dynamite will be the show taking over the 3am slot. Outside of the block so they don’t have to spend money on bumpers id assume.

Let’s trim it up to premiers. I also believe you forgot AoT 1. Assassination Classroom S2 2. Made in Abyss S1 3. One Piece 4. Attack on Titan 5. Shenmue 6. Lupin the Third Part 6 7. Housing Complex C 8. Yashahime S2 9. Made in Abyss S2 10. Naruto Shippuden 10 and a half. Half of Black Lotus So for the entire year, 10 1/2 new shows. One which has been with us since 2014, and one that was only 4 total episodes. Not quite as devoid of content as it feels like, but this year still is going down is very underwhelming. But at this time next year, we will probably look back and say “wow 10 and a half new shows! We were spoiled!”

It has not. The bill quickly passed senate, then got stalled in the house. It’s not dead though, and I believe they have till spring to make a choice on it. Once the elections wrap up they may get to it. At least I hope they do, no more DST is a dream for me. I think the intended cycle, even if it did pass, was next weeks DST would still happen. Then March springs forward and we never play with the clocks again after that. The wording for which one stays and which goes never made sense to me, but whichever time is the one where it’s night at 5pm is the one meant to go away I believe.
-
That doesn’t make sense. Unless the deal is going to take over 6 months, if a deal was close, they would have chosen a more temporary option like a double up or a briefer rerun. People held this same optimistic opinion when we got the Super rerun at midnight, and that ended up staying the lead show for almost its entire rerun.
-
I dunno. He did say this in mid September and it took till the tail end of October for him to deliver half of this promise. Excluding the 5th, there are 5 normal Toonami nights left in 2022 if we assume a Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years marathon are on the table. I highly doubt anything else new will fit into that timeframe
-
The block has been struggling for most of the year to handle 4 hours. Primarily with the bumpers, some of which have stayed the same the entire year. Yes, it’s just the rerun portion, however that still needs bumps and dialog which is work + money. Not to mention the loss of the recent originals means they don’t have a huge pool of reruns to choose from. Id assume if the hour is being cut, they will just put more Futurama or KotH there. Both of which will likely do better and alleviate some of unnecessary workload for the Toonami crew.
-
No idea why he insists on being so snarky all the time. He should not be surprised people are upset that what amounts to an entire arc of the series won’t air on the block, and people have a week and a half to source it to be caught up for Toonami. Not getting my hopes up for more announcements. Where are they gonna go? We seem to be down an hour, and the next ending show is Yashahime sometime in January.
-
I’m pretty sure MHA swapped up to midnight after a week or two of outrage at it being behind Super. Then Super was sent to the end where it should have been the entire time. Then the later part of it was at 12:30 because of Fena. It’s probably for the best to bury expectations for MHA S6 ever coming. Or any other show from Funimation besides that last stretch of AoT. S3-5 aired on Toonami 5-6 weeks behind their dub release. So it’s already a major hit that we are missing that window. And as we have seen with Mob S2, CR doesn’t seem to care how many years pass on a show, they don’t want Toonami to air it. On the AS front, it looks like they may be considering a permanent dropping of 8pm based on some promos on other networks advertising 9pm. Previous years never advertised the time change.
-
They won’t. That said, they will still probably pull better numbers than HCC did. We have seen this happen before. They just don’t want to start anything new or take any risks. We also don’t know what Zaslav is up to behind the scenes. Cutting One Piece down was not something I had on my bingo card and is something that actually does make me a little nervous
-
Oof, I knew this was the case with how short the blurb was on Facebook, but it still hurts to see it. A 6 month long commitment to a midnight rerun does not paint a bright future for the block. And now knowing they did in fact cross their T’s and dot their i’s, I have to assume the lost hour and lost One Piece was no error either. So Toonami has 6 slots, 2 of which are reruns. Why not just give us the Two Piece combo still? It’s probably not cost related, and more like Mob S2 where it’s simply not for sale to Toonami.

Now that Nov 5th is out of the way, it’s time to look at Nov 12th. Every single year DST screws me up, but I’m looking at the 5th, and it’s the same length as any other night. But when you erase the bonus hour, we lose 2 slots. I did hypothesize that they may opt to cut the rerun hour, so if that’s the case here and not just poor communication about DST, I won’t be surprised. The unfortunate implication here though is they are cutting an hour, but we keep one rerun and the second OP is the other victim. In the past, I have considered AS continues to buy OP by the arc, so if this ends up being a permanent change, should we be worried that AS only bought Fishman Island and Punk Hazard, and for some reason can’t get more so they feel the need to pad out Punk Hazard?
-
What on earth kind of mess is this? Going back to MHA S5 just screams confirmation CR shows are out no matter what. MiA S2 is neat, no movie is not. And thanks for putting it in front of Yashahime. I don’t love One Piece, but it tastes a lot better two episodes a week. Why are we dropping that? Personally I’m sick of Primal but given their rerun options, it’s the best card they have
-
With how it tanks every night, it really should just get dumped after Naruto so the rest of the shows at least have a chance. It’s the main cause for the rest of the block missing the top 50 most weeks. Starting out low certainly doesn’t help, but losing a huge chunk of that already low audience is the real killer. Bleach or MHA would be saviors if they got them, but we know odds on MHA are very low, and Bleach is still at 50/50. It certainly looks like the block could be the next day premier after the Hulu release, but you would think something major like that would have been announced by now. Total crisis scenario is if they have nothing and end up having an hour of Yashahime right up top. Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.
