Lupin the 3rd Comes to Toonami June 17th
OwlChemist81 replied to viperxmns's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
Also, now that the boards are back up, let's analyze the regular tenants (not including movies/marathons) of the 2 AM timeslot since Sword Art Online left it, shall we? 7/28/13-2/15/14: Sword Art Online (dub premiere) 2/22/14-3/15/14: Soul Eater (not a dub premiere) 3/22/14-4/26/14: Black Lagoon (not a dub premiere) 5/3/14-8/9/14: Blue Exorcist (not a dub premiere) 8/16/14-9/20/14: Gurren Lagann (not a dub premiere) 10/4/14-11/8/14: Hellsing Ultimate (1st half, not a dub premiere) 11/15/14-11/29/14: InuYasha: The Final Act (not a dub premiere) Also, note that none of the movies which aired at 2 AM during the Month of Movies II were dub premieres. 1/3/15-1/17/15: Gurren Lagann (not a dub premiere) 1/24/15-1/31/15: Deadman Wonderland (rerun, not a dub premiere) 2/7/15-3/21/15: Gurren Lagann (not a dub premiere) 3/28/15-5/21/16: Naruto: Shippuden (not a dub premiere) 6/14/16-9/24/16: One Piece (not a dub premiere) 10/1/16-3/18/17: Naruto: Shippuden (not a dub premiere) 3/25/17-6/10/17: Gundam Unicorn (yep, you guessed it, not a dub premiere) So then that means that Lupin the 3rd will now officially be the first dub premiere to air at 2 AM since Sword Art Online 1, WHICH ENDED OVER 3 YEARS AGO!! The question is: how did it come to this?? People were crowing back then how stupid it was for SAO 1 to air ahead of OG Naruto (12:30, uncut for the first time on Cable, I'll give it that), One Piece (1 AM), and Soul Eater (1:30 AM), NONE of which were dub premieres. One other feature of that schedule was that a dub premiere (Bleach) aired at Midnight, and would eventually be joined by world premiere of Space Dandy at 11:30. Eventually Bleach would end, the other permashonens would drop and sanity would prevail, as 12:30 once again became a premiere slot on 2/7/15, although combined with the loss of 11:30, which as most who have followed the block for the past 5 years was used for AOT reruns. Well, flash forward to now, and the permashonens are all but gone, with One Piece off the schedule and Naruto Shippuden at 2:30. Now 12:30 is the new midnight, as the first dub premiere on the schedule is in that timeslot, preceded by an hour of straight-up RERUNS and DBZ Kai, which lost its dub premiere status when the DVDs came out a few weeks ago. So here we go again, dub premiere in a hard-to-watch timeslot, dragged down to the abyss by [as] programming's asinine decision to once again play a rerun at the top of the block, Toei's fuckery that led to the worst decision for Toonami since Attack on Titan reruns, and whatever unholy deal they made that keeps Tokyo Ghoul in the 1 AM timeslot. I hope despite all that, Lupin the 3rd can still do well at 2 AM since Gundam Unicorn lowered the bar to levels only reverse-eclipsed by the likes of Hellsing Ultimate and Gurren Lagann during that dark period from 2014-15. -
This Memorial Day week, while you chow down on leftover BBQ, watch some seriously sick people chow down on human flesh! Tokyo Ghoul has decided to (dis)grace us with its foul presence on the stream this week. And since only Episodes 1-8 have shown on TV, I think we can reasonably infer that it will only be Episodes 1-5 streaming all this week. So yeah, that's happening. [:poop:]

How much do you interact with Adult Swim anything?
OwlChemist81 replied to enad's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
I would say I've watched [as] outside of Toonami in 2017 a LOT more than 2016. Why? One word: Boondocks. For the first time in several years, it rose from the grave outside occasional "Animation Marathon" streaming to actually get a weeknight replay at 12:30 that featured Season 4 in March and April, then took a brief hiatus but returned at 12:15 and even got a replay at 4:30 in parts of April and May. Also, I watched Samurai Jack on Wednesday nights, Dragonball Super premieres Saturday evenings at 8 (technically outside Toonami though those are both Toonami shows), and occasionally enjoyable DVR Theater shows like Assy McGee, 12 Ounce Mouse, and even Black Dynamite. Plus I am digging the new season of Mike Tyson Mysteries despite how F**ked up some of these episodes are. Like last night's--MY GOD! -
Lupin the 3rd Comes to Toonami June 17th
OwlChemist81 replied to viperxmns's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
I don't mind a rerun on Toonami for Samurai Jack, but I do mind it at 11 PM. It's absurd that Toonami has that timeslot and it's not being used for something fresh and new, while dub premieres languish at 1:30 and 2 AM! -

You have a point, but there is the slight edge to Live + Same Day ratings that earlier shows give. The 2:30 AM timeslot is screwed because there's literally no way to watch it same day, since they consider 3 AM to 3 AM. But the 3 AM timeslot is the opposite and yet GITS seems to drop from Shippuden. The main boost is, of course, that earlier shows seem to be more accessible to casual viewers. However, they don't really get THAT much of a boost at an earlier timeslot, I guess, since Saturday night is such a party night. -
If you ask me, one thing that makes for a good ending is the following: 1. Big bad is vanquished 2. The toll on the protag(s) appears to be too great 3. Everything still turns out OK somehow in the end It's cliché, but I'm a sucker for it when it happens. The shows on my list that did some variation on it are Hellsing, Parasyte, IY:FA, and JoJo Part 2. FMA:B sort of did but it was more of a "now how's he gonna get out of this?" sort of thing, and really IY:FA's ending was like that as well! Also Michiko & Hatchin, as they're forced to split up and a timeskip happens but after all that time they re-unite. And of course there were losses in Gundam IBO Season 1 but it was still "mission accomplished!" I DON'T like the Gurren Lagann and Samurai Jack endings because they do the exact opposite. In both cases, it SEEMS like there won't be anymore loss once the big bad is vanquished, and then after a short timeskip of denoument proportions, the final sacrifice is made profound. It's kind of like "the Scourging of the Shire" in the book version of Return of the King (not in the movie; spoiler alert: Saruman actually survives in the books), in which despite the greater peace being restored, the big bad still gets in one last cheap shot at the victorious protagonist and he has to cope with loss one last time. Simon and Jack sort of dealt with it similarly, both finding a sense of peace with the new universe, but the shock still seems undeserved since they've made all the right moves and have done no wrong. It's the biblical Job complex! Oddly enough, I'm still able to include KILL la KILL in my favorites although Senketsu is lost; guess it's because he's just a piece of clothing, and sort of becomes part of Ryuko. Also, the main love interest, Ryuko x Mako (possibly with Gamagoori as the "designated dick" in my headcanon) is not sacrificed as a result of beating Ragyo, so it's not quite as poignant and cheap as Gurren or Jack. And One-Punch Man and Space Dandy, which round out my Top 10, are just FUN endings, even if the former DOES establish Amai Mask as an ultra-dick for slaughtering the surviving aliens!

Lupin the 3rd Comes to Toonami June 17th
OwlChemist81 replied to viperxmns's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
If you could re-arrange the June 17th schedule to your liking (same shows), how would you do it? Here's my lineup: 11 PM Dragon Ball Super 11:30 DBZ Kai Final Chapters 12 AM Attack on Titan 12:30 Hunter x Hunter 1 AM Lupin the 3rd 1:30 Naruto Shippuden 2 AM Tokyo Ghoul 2:30 Samurai Jack 3 AM GITS Maybe the ratings will suck this week and they'll reconsider Samurai Jack at 11. I just don't see how episodes that have aired FIVE times already on the network will do any damn good! -
Samurai Jack Memorial Day Weekend Marathon Discussion
OwlChemist81 replied to StarPanda's topic in Episode Discussion Archive
Wow, 2 pages!? Man, marathon discussions are DEAD! -
I get where you're going with this, but it was specifically supposed to be favorite/least favorite endings of Toonami's 5 years on [as], so that would mean 10, 9, 8, 3, and 2 of the favorites and 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, and 2 of the least favorites are disqualified! Apologies that I didn't seem to make that as clear as I thought I did!

It's ok. You really didn't miss much. Just Lupin at 2 instead of 1:30, and that offhand mention of old remasters we'really probably reading too much into! -

Toonami Pre-Flight Discussion Thread
OwlChemist81 replied to OwlChemist81's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
It's 8:01 PM ET and JoJo is still going on the stream, which means Pre-Flight Presents MomoCon Panel Simulcast begins at 8:30! Meantime, enjoy the bonus episode of JoJo, or something! (It's Episode 19, in case you care) -
Listening to Episode 17 right now on the Stream, I get the feeling that Esidisi might be voiced by an African-American VA. I mean, all 4 Pillar Men were voiced by relative unknowns! Edit: well what do you know...and look who ELSE he plays! Catcher Freeman and Boros! http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=111836 And actually, Santana/Santviento and Wamuu's voice actors were in a LOT more roles!

Toonami Pre-Flight Discussion Thread
OwlChemist81 replied to OwlChemist81's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
So do y'all think this MomoCon panel will be simulcast tonight on Pre-Flight? It starts at 8:30 PM, apparently, which might mean 30 more minutes of JoJo on the streaming channel. -
Oh, wait a minute, this wasn't the original thread--oops! :poop:
-
Bumping this for tonight because we MIGHT get a special Pre-Flight live from MomoCon with tons of announcements! I say "might", because Pre-Flight typically begins at 8 PM ET and the panel is scheduled for 8:30. Hmmm... Does that mean 30 extra minutes of JoJo leading up to the panel simulcast or that the panel won't be simulcast? Hmmm...

Well, it's been 5 years that we've had Toonami on [as], and lots of shows have came and went, and some have ended on a much better note than others. In this thread, we talk about our favorite and least favorite endings that have aired on Toonami on [as] over those past 5 years (reruns of [as] shows are acceptable as long as they aired at least once during [as] and Toonami's late Saturday night block since 5/26/12), counting them down from 10 to 1 if we want. I'll start: Best Endings: #10: Hellsing Ultimate - Yes, the bad guys won at first and there was that cheesy time skip, but after that, it was a happy, open-ended sort of ending! #09: Space Dandy - Straight-up epic in scale, with equal parts humor, philosophy, and action. Out "Big O-ed" The Big O! #08: KILL la KILL - Everyone got naked, and the main character went on a date with her sidekick! Yay! #07: Michiko & Hatchin - Was cool that they reunited after such a long time! #06: Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans (Season 1) - A feel good ending that made the journey feel worth it! #05: InuYasha: The Final Act - The feel-good ending everyone wanted to see, even if it was teased that it might not happen. #04: Parasyte -the maxim- - Choosing to save a life and to accept a lesser form of existence to become a silent guardian! #03: One-Punch Man - An epic finale to the first season, with a nice little bit of humor thrown in! #02: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (Part 2) - Like IY and Hellsing, it teased the sad ending but then turned feel-good! #01: Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood - A feel-good ending, quite possibly the best both Toonami and [as] has had to offer! And now, my 10 least favorite: #10: Dimension W - Pretty much as much of a mess as the show which preceded it! #09: Gurren Lagann - Would have been one of the most epic of all time if not for the downer epilogue! #08: Ghost In The Shell 2nd Gig - After all this time we get a total non-ending with no Tachikomas! #07: Sym-Bionic Titan - WE want more! We want more! C'mon Genndy! #06: Deadman Wonderland - A total non-ending with no hope of continuation! #05: Samurai 7 - So sad to see a bunch of those characters go! #04: Sword Art Online II - Yep, she died of AIDS. Total tear-jerker! #03: Samurai Jack - Gurren Lagann did it better, but that's really not saying much. #02: Akame ga KILL! - Absolutely NO ONE but the titular character survived! #01: Thundercats - Gotta blame CN for this one; even worse was the last episode Toonami showed right before they lost the rights involved Lion-O losing and going through the door to hell!

It seems this would be the last chance to watch this set of episodes right now! Granted, it most likely will return in a few months, probably with Phantom Blood first! We should be advancing to 16-20 tonight at exactly 9 PM; I'll update y'all on whether or not that actually happens! Edit: the Stream did advance! Episodes 16-20 from now until Friday at about 7 PM it is!
