Dark_Cloud_Overhead Posted yesterday at 02:46 AM Posted yesterday at 02:46 AM (edited) Honestly never even occurred to me that the Ferengi were ever intended to mirror Jews in any way. As a DS9 superfan more or less, it seemed pretty clear to me that the Bajorans were much more specifically designed to represent the Jewish people than any other species. Unlike the Ferengi, they were portrayed as having a profound connection to their religion that shaped their culture. They also went through a long horrific occupation and oppression by the Cardassians, who were some of the nastiest Star Trek villains ever IMO, who were pretty clearly meant to represent the Nazis. Granted, Roddenberry died a bit before DS9 got started, so he had really no creative input in its production. If there were feelings out there that Roddenberry may have been critical of Jews, I honestly don't think its a bad thing that his successors may have taken steps then to try and be more inclusive and do things to try and address those concerns and feelings that were out there. The creators didn't seem to point to any specific historical inspiration for them from what I can see, but to me I always felt there were a number of episodes where they had flashbacks showing parts of the occupation of Bajor that really evoked thoughts of the holocaust in my mind. But yeah, there's plenty of other examples throughout history you could probably point to that you could just as well argue it paralleled. Quote

mthor Posted 8 hours ago Posted 8 hours ago (edited) @ghostrek Thanks for asking, but I've got nothing to add. I haven't watched any Trek (aside from the occasional episode of TOS if I stay up after Batman) in roughly 30 years. I always liked the Ferengi; they reminded me of a guy I knew in college (who, for the record, was Irish Catholic, not Jewish), but that's about all I've got. Edited 8 hours ago by mthor Quote
