Damn, Sanji's family leads an evil criminal organization!  

I hope they aren't as psychotic as Doflamingo and his family.  

And here I thought Sanji was a prince LOL.  Guess I didn't get so spoiled after all when I heard about the Vinsmoke thing. 🤣

Is this kind of a retcon of Sanji's backstory or is it all compatible with his time with Zeff?

No, nothing was retconned. You'll have to wait for the obligatory One Piece Tragic Backstory to see how things went down.

So Sanji's got a secret dark past. Heh, he's like a character straight out of a telenovela. Makes sense given his dream of finding the All Blue that he would want to leave that kind of life behind though. Looking forward to learning more about it all.

Thanks. Not that I would even have an issue with it, but i know sometimes story elements get introduced that don't always sync perfectly with existing canon.

Not a retcon but an expansion of his backstory since Sanji's family was never brought up until now

thanks...i could not remember if they ever  mentioned specifics but assumed it came up during the Baratie episodes

I thought Sanji was an orphan, vagabond, or just some dude, going by his intro arc.  But, he was with Zeff since he was a kid, so I guess he wasn't with his family for long?

Yeah those were my assumptions for the most part, but I'm guessing it was left vague enough to give some flexibility.

Sanji's family was never brought up during the baratie arc. I will argue though this kind of thing should have been  showned off to readers/viewers sooner. It's a good sub back story to Sanji besides Zeff.

The author shouldn't have waited this long to reveal Sanji's family to us

Definitely haha.  It took a long time for Luffy's backstory too, which was odd.  In both cases we all assumed there wasn't anymore relevant backstory to tell.

There's a couple other  notable characters that are treated like this too,maybe because the story is bring stretched longer than intended
