Blue Exorcist: Kyoto Saga - Episode 1 - "Small Beginnings"

Rin Okumura, who was exposed as the son of Satan by Amaimon's attack, has been placed under the supervision of Shura Kirigakure by the Order of the True Cross. With his secret now out in the open, each of his friends take the revelation in their own way. While he practices manipulating his blue flames, they learn of the theft of a dangerous item.

 

 

Manga canon finally returns with Blue Exorcist season 2 as A-1 Pictures finally resumed adapting the manga in January 2017 with more seasons to follow.

Correct, most of the battle happened, but no gate and as such Rin didn't break his sword against it. Pretty sure the trial has some slight differences too (I think they're touched on later, since it's mentioned in the trivia that in canon Rin was unconscious unlike in the first anime where Mephisto woke him up)

Seems like Rin's hair is shorter in this version.  Shiemi's hair is different too, more rounded.

Oh that's right, character relationships have been reverted to right after the incident. 

Izumo of all people sits with him LOL.

There's other Exorcists that are mixed demon-human heritage.  But being son of Satan is that much worse?  But... Mephisto is working for the order because reasons.

Was she denying being nice or cheering him up LOL.  Not on first name basis lmao.

Called them all cowards haha. 

I am kind of surprised by Shiemi's reaction though.  Not sure if it's fear though.

Yeah, subtle changes to the designs here, but mostly still the same, with the new artist and then S3 pushes it further and makes them look a little older with a good brand new studio (Studio VOLN, which is ex-Madhouse).

Protect Rin?  Rin is probably more powerful but less skilled and experienced than Yukio.

Izumo's reaction is so good and kind of both unexpected and expected at the same time, lol

Yeah, not sure if it's fear or just overwhelming since she's so sensitive.

Ah OK.  Is this style closer to the manga or just different for the heck of it?

Presumably the characters would look older by that point because of a time skip or gradual passage of time.

That was good haha.  I liked Izumo reading the riot act to the others too.

I think just really upset because of what we just saw in the flashback, Rin tried to lighten the mood with comedy and she didn't take it well.

Currently I think it's mostly the same as S1, even the background art is very close and sharper. This is because the production studio is still the same here, it's still A-1 Pictures. I think the slight difference is just due to 5 years of production improvements and 5 years since Keigo Sasaki first adapted the characters, since he's still character designer for season 2. S3's are more different and more rounded due to the new studio and new artist taking over, which takes some time to get used to, and they do get better at it over time as well during and after S3 (since the designs are a little inconsistent scene to scene at first, but things like the action animation are still good right away). For example, season 4 is a big improvement refining the new designs again. Season 2 has really great animation though in particular, so it would have been cool if A-1 had continued, since they're style really adapted the "cool".

It's possible I guess. It's funny because I remember reading fairly recently about how Japanese woman back in the day would remove their eyebrows and then paint them on, but I never made the connection to Izumo even though it's in the exact same style. I wonder what the connection is to her character.

It's pretty crazy when you consider they did this partially to suppress their reactions in social seetings. Goes to show how dedicated they were to their craft and service. Shogun had some good info on this.

Shiemi suddenly being afraid of Rin post-Son of Satan reveal aside, I'm liking this return to canon. Definitely makes up for Bleach TYBW not showing up on [as]'s website yet/ever.

(And yes, I did give her a "Fuck you." Mostly to give myself relative peace of mind.)
