So there was a dude in my local skateboarding scene that apparently killed himself recently. He was a great guy....an individual and artist that went out of his way for the community all together. I say that because he was a skateboarder that did a lot of things for skaters in the local community....That's how we met. Also a professional model lol... Like he did male modeling. He had a plant horticulture art thing going on which I probably...I mean looking at his posts on facebook it's like plant art idk. but he did that. *sigh*  I never even took the plant art thing seriously I guess idk. but I want to now and it's probably too late.

That being said one of my childhood friends made a friggin cry for help on facebook. I'm talking to him. He's now getting into music production and sounds like he isnt going to be another victim to the topic here so I'm gonna take the W.

It's good that you're there to help them out.

It just sucks to find out after the fact that close friends or hell.. even minor acquaintances you believe you might be good friends with but never had the luxury...I digress I guess. Point is finding out people killed themselves after the fact, or not even knowing they're close to the edge fucking sucks. With that said my friend is now pumping tracks in this new style ofmusic.. I forgot what he called it even it's very contemporary I guess lol. There's also a crowd sourced suicide fund he's set up recently... He did it with his facebook birthday fundraiser thing so idk....:|

He's just now getting back in the mix. Makes me want to more than ever as well...Especially when growing up he was the beat guy anyway. ^_^

Sometimes, just being there is enough.

I’ve  been in that headspace before. You don’t always make obvious moves. You’re lucky to find someone about to hit it.

I remember a guy in my circles that was influential to the skater and music scene where I went to high school that killed himself, too. Even kept the (then) longest running skatepark in the state up and running himself.

Most of the time,  even suicide victims don’t know they’re suicidal until it’s too late.  We’re wired to deal with problems head on, not defer them, and that includes emotional issues.  Too often we don’t know why we’re feeling upset or disconnected; we might not even recognize trauma if it falls outside the classically recognized definition.  So, the collapse of one’s emotional response systems can be sudden and catastrophic when the confluence of these two factors leads to a problem that can’t be solved even with outside help.

I am so sorry to hear about your skating friend who passed, but I am glad that you were able to help your other friend.

Suicide is a very difficult issue and I have had a few friends from the BMX and arts community who have taken their own life. In general, one issue is that an individual who is seriously suicidal, regardless of the cause, is usually committed. Unlike a call for help, they may be embarrassed, scared of being caught or thwarted or just plain despondent. Not that calls for help are not a serious case, as even taking a call for help too far can result in death and a call for help is more likely to get said help.

But someone who is committed tends to have one or more of mental disorders, drug misuse issues, bad psychological states, family and social situations, genetic predisposition, trauma or stress. Those who have previously attempted suicide are also more likely to succeed in the future if they try again. There is also the fact that many cases are impulsive, so the individual may be determined at the time, but it is usually not a rational thought. Yet if they succeed there is no recourse. A committed individual may try to hid these risk factors.

In terms of skaters and athletes, traumatic brain injury and multiple concussions (Chronic traumatic encephalopathy) can also be a risk factor in suicide. See Dave Mirra, the BMX legends death.

For me personally, the most tragic part is the fact that you are less likely to see the signs of a serious infliction until it is too late. The individual is less likely to get the help that they need. You tend to not notice until it is too late. The individual may go on a 'goodbye tour' right before they take their own life, visting many friends, giving gifts and generally seeming happy. So you think everything is okay. But then they are gone and there is nothing you can do.

Please, if anyone is out there feeling this way, please reach out to someone. Anyone.

Your life is valuable.
