They were not comfortable. :D They were only fun to trace with your fingers because of the smoothness.

Yeah I don't think people knew what comfort was back then. It's not even cushioned, just has leather riveted onto wood!

I think for some of those it was more about "art" than comfort.  Just look at some of the chairs Frank Lloyd Wright designed.

looking at old photos I can see that the doctor side of the family really clashed with the farming side of the family in the comfort and functionality vs baller aesthetic. I mean look at my great grandmothers mom on her wedding day. Isn't that the face of someone just in full comfort and not wishing they weren't wearing 8 layers in the summer and standing still for a tintype that is probably going to steal their soul. Great great grandfather though dapper as fuck bully for him good sir.

If I were to guess from the look on her face, I'd say she was summoning her inner "Karen" because some kids in the direction of her icy gaze are acting up.

As most Irish farmers in the late 1800s she was probably thinking about spuds and beating children, so you're probably right. Back on the topic of odd state food. Cherokee red cherry soda. It's around here at like every kind of family function. Though I've never seen it anywhere else. It's probably the most cherry flavored soda I've ever had. It's not like a knock off soda though like Dr thunder.

West Virginia isn't known for weird foods, but they combine plenty of weird shit. Like....creamy tomatoes or milk with cornbread.

Like, really, you dunk the cornbread in a glass of milk or spread tomatoes all over it.

Oh and I don't feel like we're known for Italian Beef but there are a lot more places in the states that don't have it than I thought.
