Remember, he left the Magic Knights to defend the Capital on their own when the Midnight Sun first attacked because he thought it'd be kickass if he ambushed them when they got back to their hideout. It's thanks to that faulty thinking that Fuegoleon lost an arm. And he's lucky that that's as bad as things got, as far as named characters were concerned.

Wizard King also probably thought the Magic Knights could protect the capital on their own.
