garbagepailcat Posted July 31, 2019 Posted July 31, 2019 I have a cedar chest that I need to refinish. It got soaked in rat piss in an abandoned house.
SwimModSponges Posted July 31, 2019 Author Posted July 31, 2019 Ours is in decent condition but we're getting it refurbished anyway.
Chapinator_X Posted July 31, 2019 Posted July 31, 2019 I ended up getting some Canadian dresser recently. It’s been nice but it was murder hauling the thing up a flight of stairs.

I thought cedar chests were supposed to be unfinished. They aren't worth much if the natural odor of the wood is sealed.

I’m certainly not a furniture expert, but it’s my understanding that the inside is left unfinished while the outside can be stained/sealed. I’m also not looking for worth so much as aesthetics, so if sanding the inside doesn’t get rid of rat pee smell, I will seal it in with some poly. 1

Most of the cedar chests I've seen have a different wood on the outside for that reason.

Start with an 80 grit then after 20 minutes or so then move to 220 sandpaper Once to get the cedar smell starting bring it out in force then close the lid
