BANANA FISH

バナナフィッシュ

While on tour in Iraq, an American soldier named Griffon suddenly goes mad, shooting several of his comrades before another soldier named Max reins him in. The only words Griffon can say are “Banana Fish,” thus igniting a mystery that remains unsolved years later. That's when a strange man approaches Griffon's younger brother Ash, the leader of a New York City street gang, hands him a mysterious necklace, and tells him an address and the words “Banana Fish” before dying. Ash soon discovers that the necklace conceals a phial of some strange drug that Dino, the gang's mafia contact, is desperate to get his hands on. Before Ash can figure out what's going on, one of Dino's goons and a traitor to Ash's gang team up to kidnap Ash's protégé Skipper, accidentally nabbing visiting Japanese photography assistant Eiji along with him. But having already lost his brother, there's no way Ash is going to let Banana Fishtake anyone else from him.

The first episode was great. It introduced you to the characters in the perfect way. The animation is great and the character designs are really nice. The cast is also pretty much perfect at this point. I'm looking forward to seeing how it goes and I hope this leads to more classic manga being adapted.

that said the story has a tragic ending...unless the anime changes the ending

so expect at least some level of gayness

It probably won't reach the end. I think it's 12 episodes for a, like, 19 volume manga.

Either way, it's pretty gay already. Not in a derogatory way, but like 2 guys want the D kinda way.

Well it's airing on Noitamina in Japan, they've been airing anime with LGBT themes since before Yuri on Ice made it cool.

2nd episode was as good as the first.  But I almost choked when they suggested that Japan (the country, not just Eiji) is too innocent to have child porn...

Tentacle rape is still ok though right?

Well they already said they're gonna cover the whole manga and the only change will be moving the story to the present so I guess they will manage.

That's neat. Faster pace than I'd expect, but I'm not familiar with the series or the background production of the anim, so it could work. Most adaptions don't go through nearly a volume per ep, though.

Banana Fish is shaping up to be one of the best anime I've seen in a decade. If they can keep this momentum, this will absolutely be a top favorite for me for sure.

I'm surprised to see how well the translation of moving it to the present day vs. the 80s worked out, also. I absolutely love the art style and the designs.

Spoiler

I know *small* things that happen in the manga, but I'm trying to keep myself mostly unspoiled, I'm so afraid of certain characters (Namely Max, after showing us his adorable kid this past episode) dying, but I feel like this is kind of one of those showers where people are just gonna die and that's just how it's gonna be. (I feel like killing Skip was a way of showing that even if I'm still pretty upset they killed him off)

I still haven't watched it

Spoiler

because as much as I'm trying not to let it bother me I do have some reservations about watching ANOTHER series where all the gay characters die (stares at Voltron) (and that includes Shiro since he spend seasons 2 through 6 dead....I mean he got better but still)

even though in this case Banana fish does have an excuse as being an old series, like how HIM in the PPG is horribly insulting today but was "acceptable" in the 90's

:D:D:D

Spoiler

I'm laughing my ass off at "He died, but he got better" re; Shiro.

Voltron is a MESS.

Anyway idk who will die in Banana Fish though your reservations seem valid, it seems like a series where death of one of one of the protags could very well be a possibility.

Same. Most of the complaining I've seen comes from the "NYC isn't like that!" anymore, but at the same time there was like 12 cop shows on TV set in NYC where someone is murdered so... I can suspend my disbelief a little that these pretend gangsters are in pretend dangerous NYC.

@ NYC: as the most represented city in fiction, you're going to have to live with some errors. :D

Hell, my hometown (and surrounding areas) have been represented in media less times than I could count on my hands in any significant way and they still manage to get it wrong.

for all my hesitation to watch this I will say this

if Toonami picks up this show someday I will watch it and I will not complain about the

Spoiler

gay deaths

...because it'd be the first gay thing that isn't overtly stereotypical and insulting that Toonami has ever licensed

I'm not convinced this show has straight characters to outlive the gay ones.

They all gaybois.

Well, there is Max for straight characters, but after last week's episode I'm pretty sure he's 100% going to die. (If they don't kill him I'd be amazed, they put all the hallmarks of "This man is going to die soon" in that episode)

This was the first episode I totally didn't like.

Spoiler

The Shorter/Eiji situation was too contrived to be interesting. We get it, Golzine and Arthur are evil. There isn't much room to make them worse people, but here we are still escalating their atrocities like it's totally necessary. It made me lose a lot of interest in Golzine as an antagonist and I went from finding Arthur to be an ineffective, lamer villian than Golzine to simply wishing he wasn't in the show at all.

Yet I'm now convinced Arthur will be with us long-haul, if not outliving Golzine. I just hate Arthur and not in the good "you're supposed to hate him" way so much as the "he actively makes the show worse" way.
