So you left the extra nickel for someone else

Right

How would that work....Unless the next person was short and checked the slot as well....Otherwise, if they get change back, they wold never even know it was in there or was to help out the next guy.

This is where I would have canceled the post

I know, because the rest pokes holes in your line of thinking......If I put a dollar in, and it spits change at me, I just got a free nickel and I will never know because I'm not counting vending machine change when I grab it

I have an interesting story related to this...

Sometimes when I'm hungry, rather than getting food, I go for a soda. This was especially true in the past when I was on my college campus killing time waiting for my next class to start. A big part of this is that sodas are generally cheaper than actual food there.

So one day I was really hungry, waiting for class to start, and trying to scrounge up enough change to buy a soda from a vending machine (Pretty sure I didn't have any paper money on me either.). I was looking for 90 cents to buy a 12 ounce can from a certain vending machine. Pretty much all the other soda machines cost like $1.25 or something for a 20 ounce bottle, except this one machine that cost $0.90 for a 12 ounce can.

Anyway, digging through my back pack and my car, I only scrounge up 83 cents. (pretty much 80 cents, as the vending machines don't take pennies). Walking away from my car, I was like, fuck... than I passed a woman, took a chance, and asked her if she had a dime that I could use for the soda machine, offering her the three pennies in return (since I didn't have 10 of them). I felt weird asking this, but I have often been walked up to on campus and asked if I had change for the bus or whatever, and I would usually give it to them. So I figured karma owed me. She gave me the dime, and I was happy. So I got my soda and parked my butt somewhere to kill time for my next class.

So after a while, a campus cop walks up to me, and says, "I see you got your soda." I go like, "Uh, yeah..." So he tells me a woman came to him and told him that someone went up to her and asked her for drug money, and I fit the description. Apparently a big part of why she thought I wanted the money for drugs, is because I asked for a dime, and you know, pot comes in "dimebags"... (this was quite a bit before the stigma on pot was starting to wane).

So I tell the cop I used the dime to by the can of soda I was currently drinking from, and he said all the vending machines here have 20 ounce bottles, not cans, and the bottles are more than a dollar, not less. So I was like, "that's almost true, but I do know of one vending machine on campus that sells 90 cent cans". So he asks me where it is, I describe the location, and he goes, that's a pretty long walk from here. I acknowledge that is true, but I had a lot of time to kill. He then says he'll go check it out, and he leaves. After a while, he comes back, tells me he found the 90 cent can vending machine right where I said it would be, and that my story checks out, so everything was fine and dandy.
