so i have degenerative arthritis. yay  :|

the last couple months, my hip has been acting like an ass. to the point i thought i fractured it.

doc. ordered xrays, but when i got up to the VA yesterday, the tech said she ordered some bone density scans.

wth does that mean? why would she want that for some bone spurring flare up?

the good news is i have water therapy for 8 weeks, 2x a week. hopefully that will help.

but why the special scan?

and is ebola jr. a thing? because if it's a thing..i'm not going to be real happy if i have this thing.  :|

>:D

Fan-freakin-tastic....it's all fun and games when Mix says something stupid like Ebola jr. but when someone credible says it...."wait...is that like..real?"

It must be - I've never known Mix to deliberately mislead anybody.

It would be odd, but not unheard of, at your age, but I'm wondering if maybe they're checking for any bone loss secondary to your arthritis?

oh bloody hell. so, by the time i'm like 60...i'll just be a pile of bubble wrap?

I kind of doubt it - although there is something to be said for being carried around on a well-cushioned litter by four shirtless and well-oiled young men, while a fifth follows behind, gently fanning you with a giant ostrich plume fan...but I digress. Anyway, I don't think so. Maybe the VA's protocol requires a baseline at an absurdly young age, or, like I said, maybe they're checking for bone loss or demineralization because of the arthritis - I would imagine the toll taken by inflammation could lead to some localized issues.

i like the way you think.  :D

and you're probably right. i am hoping the water therapy will help. at least for the short term. until the VA starts doing some wolverine experimentation.

It's not that I don't know- I just can't read. I was thinking of a bone density scan. Say goodbye to osteoporosis (and those well-oiled young men) and hello to evaluation of pain (and maybe Wolverine-style implants)

It's not a scan

Bone density machines sends radiation through vibration to a bone that needs help healing

A bone density "scan" would just be called an xray

well, that's what i thought too on friday, but the tech said i had to go to the downtown office because i have to have 'not an xray' and scan was in that sentence.

either way, it's not good. it's just not good.  :(

Yeah so if he's calling them scans it advanced.

Took me a minute to realize why he'd scare you...

You mean he has not even informed you what the possibilities are?

You make it sound like he's gonna want to replace your hip

i hope that's not what the deal is.i think that mthor is right, just wants to get real technical about why the pain is.  maybe.

but no, she didn't tell me about a scan, just some xrays. but i think you're right, just extra special xray?

No, there are different types - you're thinking of osteoarthritis, which is what you can get when you're old, when you're fat, or as the result of an overuse syndrome (I have it in my knees and ankles, because I'm fat and spend a lot of time on my feet, and in the base of my right thumb, from taking blood pressures and giving shots.)

Oh, shit, here.

you don't have to explain anything to her. she's triflin' and trying desperately to  be relevant. ignore her.

You should know that all people who go into medicine, no matter whether it be doctor, nurse, radiology tech, lab tech, physical therapist, or whatever, have one thing in common: We all want to hurt people and get paid for it. If I can cause a little pain before lunch, I sleep better at night.

Seriously, when do you get your reading?

Well, that's not too bad, although I'm not the one waiting...here's hoping that the doc can see whatever it is she needs to see, and that it's something fairly easy to treat.

right? it's probably nothing more than many years of military abuse, and a baby weight that i can't lose that is causing this.

tomorrow i have my mammogram. so, all in all, another stressful week in the life of ole' disco.  :|
