had at least one Gay character

89e3a990a1e15281500e504fafa7aecc1475690112_full.jpg

and in stark contrast to every other male gay anime character ever....he's manly

in retrosepct it probably should've been obvious it was a gay show considering all the promo images were just close-ups of the main character's butts

Why does every single thread you make ask a question that I have to click on it to find out the answer to? And why are most of them about homosexuality?

because there's almost no gay anime characters in general and usually when there is one they look like this

latest?cb=20160318192455

so it's a pleasant surprise when I see one that's actually likeable and doesn't look disgusting

How do you know?  He just came off as really enthusiastic over Sekizan's attitude toward rugby, and yeah, he tries to jump him now and then, but in a friendly, super-happy-to-see-you kind of way, like your dog when you come home.  He never gave him any shy or appraising looks, like he might if he were interested in him sexually.

I'm not saying he's not, or couldn't be, just wondering what your source was for that being canon.

name one other than Yuri on ice that has actual gay characters in it though :|

most of the shows you're reffering to I already know of, and they don't really have gay characters....just a lot of equal opportunity nudity and fanservice

Huh.  I don't remember that in the sub.  Are you sure it wasn't just a "Dude, I love ya, man!" kind of bro-declaration?

Funimation likes to add stuff to their dubs when allowed

they may have added the line in just because they picked up on the subtext and wanted to turn the Implied gay storyline into a canon one with permission from the producers

Seven Mortal Sins (Lesbian cast)

Attack on Titan (Yimir)

Love Tyrant (bisexual)

Danganronpa 3 (gay character) you got me there

Nanbaka Special (gay cast) I don't think it's canon that anyone in this show is gay, I'm pretty sure it's another Free! situation

Starmyu (gay cast)

Miss Kobiyashi's dragon Maid I think Funi's dub covered up all the Lesbian stuff and the show's creator denies that it's a lesbian anime

fate prisma illya (lesbians)

Magical Index/Railgun (lesbian characters)

Sakura trick (lesbians)

Cross Days (Gay)

Kuttsukiboshi (lesbians)

I'll have to watch the rest to see if you're actually right but since you think Free! is gay I'm gonna assume no

I'm pretty sure the cast of Free! are all straight.

You also forget Kubo in Baka And Test: Summon The Beasts.

Kubo turns straight (or Bi anyway) after seeing his crush in Drag and assuming he's actually a girl

(the episode ends with him deciding to jerk off to a photo of the "mystery girl")

also yeah, none of the characters in Free! are gay, nor are any of the ones in Nanbaka

But in My First Girlfriend Is a Gal

Ranko is a lesbian. She came onto Junichi solely to drive him away from Yame so she can have her instead. After the air is cleared, she gives up on that method, and goes with cockblocking Junichi and getting closer to Yame.

Theres also:

Koi to Uso

Netsuzou Trap

Scums Wish

Centaur no Nayami

Shūmatsu no Izetta

Hitorijime My Hero

Super Lovers

Gakuen Handsome

that one is indeed gay, it isn't very good but it's gay, the rest I've never seen so I can't offer an opinion, and I'm pretty sure Gakuen Handsome is a comedy anime which is more homophobic than it is gay

Funi doesn't edit the gay out of their dubs. Never watched Free!, but it's in the Fujoshi listings. Some shows are odd with the creators, like HunterXHunter goes heavy on gay implications, but never confirms that the characters are gay. The creator even said that Hisoka isn't gay despite Gon making him Hard, and some scenes where Hisoka is looking at Gon and Kills asses. There is also this video. Kinda makes you wonder how the creator views women since they have either been evil or deformed or have odd messed up features through most of the series.

An easier option though watching everything I listed will be just to go to TV Tropes and look up the yaoi and yuri pages and click the characters tabs.

if you wanna get technical Hisoka isn't gay, he's a Pedophile

with the other show's you mentioned, and this is a person thing with me, if a show's creator denies that a character is gay, then I accept that denial

so no, none of the boys in Free! are gay, name some animes with CANON gay characters if you want to prove your point

that said you might have a point about Hunter X Hunter since we know that Togashi once tried to make a Gay themed sports anime but was ridiculed for it, it's possible he's making all the female characters in HXH the way they are as a way to imply that the only sane pairing in the show is GonXKillua

but with most mainstream anime's track record, I doubht it

I forgot about Steins Gate has a gay character.

Either way there are gay characters and series everywhere. Just because Free isn't one doesn't mean the list is bunk. Hell I remember you making 5 threads a day about Goku and Vegeta being gay despite them being married and having kids :D

If you want girl/girl ones I would go as far to say every other anime has at least one lesbian character, if not a full lesbian cast. For guys though it's probably closer to every fourth anime having a guy/guy thing going on.

Really just watch more anime it pops up all the time.

yeah but usually when guy/guy stuff pops up it involves a "gay" character trying to rape a straight guy....and then by the end of the series the gay rapist ends up turning straight...like in Baka Test

You might like the twist in cross days then because it has a part where straight characters rape a gay character....I guess it's not gay if he's dressed as a girl???

Index Railgun - Kuroko, Saten, Uiharu (creator confirmed) see now that I can get behind, its nice to see a creator confirm a character is gay since usually anime creators confirm the opposite

7 Mortal Sins - Whole female Cast softcore porn  eeeh porn is one thing, wholesome rep is better to me, seems more meaningful

Cross Days - The Gay route of School Days lots of Trap sex I don't like traps

Steins Gate - Urushibara *outspoken love for the MC and wishes to be a Girl so Senpai MC would accept him kay

Tsunomomo - Gay crossdressing character confessing to the MC in the first episode, is really the Student Council President and later repeats how much he loves the MC. I'll look into it

fate prisma illya - girls making out the series I started watching this once but it was just....odd

Strike Witches - Girls groping each other in pantsu and doki doki feelings the series

Sakura Trick - Girls making out lesbian cast

Attack on Titan - Yimir

Tiger and Bunny - Fire Emblem I.e. a version of Puri Puri Prisoner who's actually like-able and isn't disgusting, I already knew about him

Ixon Saga DT - Mariandale (trans-pre op likes men) Mariandale is of a similar ilk to Puri Puri Prisoner of largely being a joke and being somewhat offensive

Tokyo Godfathers I love this movie

Wandering Son - The main characters are pre op male trans, and there is a post op male to female trans that is their mentor a lot of people dislike the ending, namely the trans boy character randomly decides he isn't trans and goes back to saying he's a girl

Free may not be gay but god damnit it's trying

iwatobi1.png

Free is just a Fujo-bait show, they imply the characters are gay then throw in constant reminders that none of them are gay and there never will be any gay characters in the series, stop mentioning it

1) I don't recall anyone in Starmyu being gay.  They go to an all-boys school for performing arts, but that doesn't = gay.  They just look up to their sempais.

2) Urushibara is trans as is Mariondale (Mariondale is great, fight me).  Trans =/= gay.  You can be gay and trans, just like you can be hetero and trans.  Neither of these characters is gay.  Pre or post-op has nothing to do with it.  Surgery alters your body, not your gender identity or sexual orientation.  You're not gay pre-op and magically straight post-op.

3) Hisoka is not a pedophile, he's a cideophile?  I don't think there's a word for it.  He's turned on by anyone he feels is worth killing slowly.  If he were a pedo, he wouldn't have felt it necessary to wait for Gon to get older and more lethally skilled.  Right now he's turned on by Gon's potential, but he's not "ripe" yet, which is pretty much something you'd never hear a pedo say.

he stares at Gon and Killua's butts in a later arc

also weirdly enough some trans people claim their sexuality changed when they transitioned from one gender to another

though I find that a bit questionable (it's more likely to me that finally being comfortable in their physical body made them more open to what their actual sexuality was)

if anything all this thread has proven is that there's a lot of "Sexy lesbian" stereotypes in recent anime :|

If you count the past decade as recent then yes roughly 50% of all anime in that time frame has had at least one lesbian character.  Really I have never been into the whole girl/girl thing, but Japan makes the shit out of it. Pretty much the anime industry makes what will sell merchandise and DVD/Blurays.  There was an interview a while back where I think one of the animators of Idol master said he would love to work on something else, but they have to do what the studio gives them because it sells.

I mean I'd still like an anime with a male gay character who isn't a rapist drag-queen (one Punch man) and who doesn't "outgrow" being gay when they see (what they think is) a woman for the first time (Baka test)

  • 4 weeks later...

In reference to the comments about Hisoka, while I admit he is very creepy and perverted in a lot of scenes. I'd definitely say he is one of the few characters portrayed as gay in anime where being gay is not the main crux of his character but rather just a facet that is referenced. It is just too bad that he is an anti-hero and is a straight-up creeper most of the time. This premise of portraying a character's sexuality or otherwise minority status as just a part of their character is my personal favorite type of inclusion. Otherwise, you end up with anime or even other media either forcing in gay characters for the emphasis on being inclusive, edgy, progressive, or simply cause the author thinks the type of character is cute to have around (like a pet). This to me is the only type of inclusion of a character that I really find offensive and distasteful because it basically is saying "this character is gay/black/lesbian/other-nationality/other religion and has no other purpose for being in this story. If I see this in an anime, manga, book, movie, tv show I instantly think to myself "I wish they had just not included this character". Anyways, just had to get that off my chest lol.

There are a lot more than there used to be coming out such as Yuri on Ice, Junjou Romantica, and Super Lovers. With many others having strongly implied though unconfirmed gay feelings/romance such as Free. Most of these are in the romance category only though, it would be nice to see a normalized relationship as a part of a character's identity in a non-romance anime. This isn't really very important to me as it is to some others, as I don't usually care very much about whether a character is actually in love with an anime but rather see it as a nice addition if integrated into the story properly. It'd be a nice extra cherry on top to see some normalized gay characters or even just flirting that is not immediately shunned or portrayed as embarrassing in non-romance anime, but it is not that important to me like I said.

The two most in question are Rin and Haru, though they are lifelong childhood friends so it is possible that the intense and somewhat romantic type of expression expressed between them is simply due to that. The sexuality of the boys including those two is never stated or explored, but I think it is heavily implied they have strong possible romantic feelings for eachother. As someone whose first boyfriend was first a lifelong childhood friend, I can attest that this type of relationship is pretty prevalent among gay men at least (though it is probably not the most common experience, it is certainly not uncommon).

There are plenty of current anime and manga that have gay characters either as supporting or the main cast, however they are mostly strictly romance animes as I pointed out. What you are talking about is that it is not normalized in mainstream shounen or seinen animes, which I would definitely agree with. I would attribute this to a lack of gay authors or even authors that have first-hand experiences to draw on through relatives or close friends that are gay making those types of animes. I don't know this for a fact and is obviously a difficult assumption to prove, but I think it isn't an illogical or unlikely one. Another possible explanation is that many of those types of animes are aimed primarily at 12 to 18-year-old boys and in seinen case young adult males, which obviously the majority of which are straight and thus would be mostly uninterested at the material's inclusion. That ultimately leads to either a lack of willingness to include such characters by authors that otherwise would in order to not detract from the popularity or by choice of editors and publishers who would view it as a risk to profit and success.

Just to further illustrate my point in the difference in the portrayal by genre. I would like to include that I can really only name four non-romance themed anime from the last 10 years with canonical gay male characters and a few with lesbian characters. They would be Agame ga Kill, One Piece, Mirai Niki, and One Punch man (with the last being a parody caricature). As for Lesbians, there are probably more than this, but the ones that stand out are Attack on Titan, Psycho-Pass, and One Piece. There are a few more but they are much older and pretty unique/isolated for their time period. Sailor Moon, Neon Genisis Evangelion being the most obvious examples.

In regards to the original OP, that is very interesting. I usually don't watch any type of sports, cooking, or gaming centered animes (though I did recently start watching Kakegurui and it is a fantastic anime about gambling), as they are usually not my cup of tea. However, I have heard All-Out is really good by a large number of people even among sport's animes, of which I have really only watched Free! and Yuri on Ice, and even then though I appreciated the beauty of the emotions and drama I found mostly boring....... and only watched because my current love interest wanted to watch them with me. Now I know how straight guys feel when they get dragged to see Sandra Bullock movies lmao.

I suppose I just gravitate towards action, sci-fi, horror, and mystery animes. In fact, my tastes are very odd and the more eccentric, violent, insane, or horrific it is the more I tend to like it. I am a big fan of stuff like Dead Man Wonderland, Gantz, Berserk, Elfen Lied, and Higurashi type stuff, when I'm not watching shounen about Pirates, Adventure, Spaceships, Super Heros, and blowing shit up with energy blasts and laser beams.
