actually reading some comments people have written online and i may have misinterpreted the scene. there are no night's watch men in that last scene; it's just jon and wildlings. this would seem to suggest that he had no intention of going back to the watch. he joined the freefolk. the watch may not even exist anymore and the whole thing was a clever ploy to get him away from grey worm. that i can live with.
