    Japan has a rather...contentious relationship with China and Korea over WWII crimes and their continued refusal to acknowledge them. To so casually have someone named after a war criminal, even if accidentally, stirs up a lot of negative feelings about Japan’s continued denial of those war crimes.

    Short version - A pun for a Doctor accidentally reflected the name of an infamous Japanese WWII doctor who participated in human experimentation. Shounen Jump realized this was done out of error, and to appease their international audience, asked the author to change the name. Outrage mobs want an apology. Haters of woke crowds consider this a betrayal and bending the knee. And the author’s rep has taken a major hit.

    I’ll say this much - When your opening is a riff on “In the Navy”, no one is taking the show all that seriously.

    The true appeal? For Americans, it hits the same sweet spot as one of the most popular cartoons of the 90’s - Likable characters Longform, compelling storytelling Colorful art and animation And it creates something that not only sticks, but makes people want to see what happens next.

    Depends if FUNi wants to sit on the license or if they’re needled by the Japanese company into negotiating a peaceful transfer of the rights to save face with the licensor. Sentai would probably be all over it now.

    Oda has confirmed a 10 episode season for Netflix. No word on a cast yet. Be very afraid.

    The guy who plays Rock Lock in the MHA dub got Powerhouse Animation (Castlevania, Seis Manos) to do his proof of concept for a super robot series called Star Child.

    At least they confirmed why Bleach got pulled. Kubo himself pulled the plug because they were going to change too much. To be fair, that Japanese movie wasn’t too bad. Naruto IIRC got optioned and nothing came of it.

    These series (And movies) get optioned and never made. Remember back in the 90’s Alicia Silverstone was attached to a live action Sailor Moon and an executive actually optioned a live action Ranma 1/2.

    This was such a divided thing back then. It was TV-14 (that’s good!) but live action (that’s bad). Still, the Faithful got to see Jack Nicholson at the museum so it’s worth it.

    So...nothing new. You know, Crunchyroll’s co-productions are right there. There is nothing stopping you from going to them and asking for the rights to a show like you did for gen:Lock.
