Me too. I finally set some time aside to work more on my stories, again. Some of them were already bound but they are unpublished. Having a chapbook of our poems and short stories was a graduation requirement for the Creative Writing Minor, 12 years ago. Even though it has been 12 years since graduating, I was forced to backburn trying to get published due to family deaths, emergencies, job hunting, working, and my own health scares. Over the last few months, I finally made time to revise and submit some of the short stories I have written over the last 6-12 years.

It has been a very hectic day on and offline. So hectic that it has been dizzying. This definitely calls for a hot mug of Peppermint Tea. With me having a sore throat, it's for the best. Speaking of writing, I just submitted 3 of my short stories for a writer's review. Hopefully, there will be no complications, especially since today is the deadline.

Without a doubt, I am indeed guilty of this. You could blame it on the fact, that I am a writer but try to keep it short. However, that is close to impossible, especially when being deep in thought about something. Don't believe me? Visit the Arts & Literature sub-forum, right now. LMAO!

What Type(s) Of Stories Do You Write?
PurgatoryGirl replied to PurgatoryGirl's topic in Arts, Literature & Music
Does anyone here have friends, who are published and/self-published authors? What about having discussions with friends or possibly with other writers in regards to the genre of your work? In other words, what if your friends and/other writers believe your stories should be labeled under a different genre than what you personally think they should be labeled? For example, some of my friends, who are published, believe that my work is more Horror than Thriller. Since the Horror Industry keeps recycling the same cliches (werewolves, vampires, zombies, witches, etc.) they barely give other types of horror much recognition. Even though my stories have none of the above, they are still Horror. At the same time, I believe that my work has the ability to overlap into Thriller, most specifically Psychological Thriller. It seems like most people forget that we can find horror in the simplest things such as real-life phobias, tragedies, crimes, etc. that we watch and read on our local news and beyond. Honestly, I can't help reiterating how much I have always favored the Slasher Horror sub-genre. It was the most demonized out of the Horror genre, during the '80s and I mostly believe it was because stalkers and serial killers resonate more with reality. Dealing with either of them can be frightening. Although, serial killers and stalkers in fiction can be seen as Psychological Thriller. So, what are your thoughts?- 52 replies

At least not for me anyway. Student Bodies was meant to be a contrived Slasher Horror Comedy, that spoofed off other films. Mind you this was more than a decade before the SCREAM and Scary Movie franchises. There wasn't much luck finding a longer clip of this particular Student Bodies scene to share on here. Watching the first 5 minutes or so of Student Bodies in general is hilarious. The dog meowing like a cat, then hiking up his leg to fart still cracks me up.

When it comes to Chocolate Candy on a budget, I like Snickers, Mars Milky Way, Twix, and Nestle Crunch the most. Now, Ghirardelli, Godiva, and Lindor Chocolate? Mmm... yum. Those are the more expensive brands, that I refuse to part with. LOL!

While watching The Evil Dead earlier tonight, I didn't get started on eating Gummi Spiders and Centipedes. However, I did munch on some Gummi Bananas. LOL! If the stores tried pushing more creepy crawly type of candy during Halloween, it would help to set a spooky tone for the kiddies.

What Horror Movie/Show Are You Watching Right Now?
PurgatoryGirl replied to DragonSinger's topic in Horror
An hour ago, the Sony channel aired the original Evil Dead film from 1981. For more than 20 years, I have been reading and hearing about it. After watching it earlier tonight, I was unimpressed and find Bruce Campbell to be highly overrated. It's only a matter of time until a fanboy or girl gets riled up about me not singing his praises.Watching him in The Evil Dead felt like I was watching Will Ferrell in a Splatterpunk Horror Movie. It's hard to take someone like Bruce Campbell seriously without trying not to laugh, while staring at him. Imagine Family Guy's Peter Griffin in a Horror movie. The Exorcist from the '70s was scarier and more convincing than The Evil Dead. Generally speaking, I couldn't help rolling my eyes, while laughing at how contrived the movie and the acting were in The Evil Dead. After watching The Evil Dead tonight, I'm starting to realize why I always favored Slashers Horror. Slashers are more realistic because serial killers actually exist. -
Glad to see that you enjoyed your birthday.

What Type(s) Of Stories Do You Write?
PurgatoryGirl replied to PurgatoryGirl's topic in Arts, Literature & Music
At the end of last week, I suppose you could say that I managed to find a loophole, in regards to sharing excerpts of stories and what would be considered "previously published work." http://writersrelief.com/blog/2013/11/what-is-considered-previously-published-writing/ Originally, I was going to share an excerpt of a short story. After remembering just how divisive certain posters can be on this site, I changed my mind. The less drama, the better. Meanwhile, have you ever been in the middle of revising any of your stories and started laughing at some of the dialogue, that you wrote for certain characters? I'm really curious mostly because I found myself cracking up, while re-reading some of the snarky, dark humor that I wrote for certain characters' dialogues. So, have you EVER had that experience? BTW: Happy Birthday to PokeNirvash! Eat, drink, and be merry!- 52 replies

What Horror Movie/Show Are You Watching Right Now?
PurgatoryGirl replied to DragonSinger's topic in Horror
Over the last 24 hours or so, I haven't really been watching as many films because most of my time has been spent revising some of my stories, along with doing chores. The Slasher Horror Comedy, Student Bodies just finished re-airing on Encore Classic a few minutes ago. That spoof was more than a decade before the SCREAM and Scary Movie franchises. -

At least The Bangles' "Walk Like An Egyptian" has something to do with Egypt. BTW: I enjoyed that song growing up in the '80s.- 15 replies

Music References In JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
PurgatoryGirl replied to PurgatoryGirl's topic in Anime & Manga
Not that I'm a died hard Tim Burton fan or anything, but the franchise would've been better to use a campy score similar to a Tim Burton film as an opening theme song. The opening for Diamond Is Unbreakable sounds like something, that would've been used for Space Dandy. LOL! As for Prog Rock being used for Phantom Blood, there was a character named after the drummer, Bill Brumford from Yes.- 15 replies

Music References In JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
PurgatoryGirl replied to PurgatoryGirl's topic in Anime & Manga
There was barely any mentioning of Savage Garden, when I was in high school during 1999. Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, N'Sync, 98 Degrees, and The Backstreet Boys were more popular than Savage Garden back then. That's not including artists and bands from other music genres and sub-genres. If Savage Garden was still popular in 1999, barely anyone I knew of talked about them. My main point is that the current opening and ending theme songs don't match the tone of Diamond Is Unbreakable.- 15 replies

Music References In JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
PurgatoryGirl replied to PurgatoryGirl's topic in Anime & Manga
"Roundabout" was a song released by the band, Yes in the early '70s and if memory serves me right, there was a character named after the drummer for Yes in Phantom Blood. I believe his name was Brumford. Whether you like Rock Music or some other genre or sub-genre, the music for the opening and ending theme songs don't fit the tone or theme of the series. The franchise, could've used a song(s) with an ominous tone to it. Something to give the viewers a creepy vibe, since Diamond Is Unbreakable explores Suburban Horror. I know that JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is a campy franchise but Diamond Is Unbreakable instantly gives a darker tone to the season at the beginning of episode 1. That's all I'm saying. BTW: I recently discovered in that in another part, there is a character named after the Rap Metal band, Limp Bizkit, which is hilarious.- 15 replies

Music References In JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
PurgatoryGirl replied to PurgatoryGirl's topic in Anime & Manga
I don't know if anyone else feels this way, but I think the opening and ending theme songs for Diamond Is Unbreakable not only suck, but they also don't fit the tone of this season. Considering that Diamond Is Unbreakable is supposed to be about Suburban Horror in Japan, during the time of 1999, I'm not buying what the franchise is selling. The opening theme song sounds like cheesy, 1970's Porno Music, that would be used for Space Dandy. Even though Japan's music industry and Japanese pop-culture are slightly different from American pop-culture, as well as other Western countries, Savage Garden's "I Want You" doesn't fit the series at all. Coming from someone, who WAS in high school during 1999, Savage Garden had already faded from most charts. There were so many artists and bands before and during 1999, that the music genres and sub-genres were endless. Since the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure franchise normally uses Rock bands in the openings and endings, they could've at least tried acquiring the rights to something that was darker, angsty, and/more aggressive-sounding. Otherwise, the franchise could've tried acquiring the rights to a Rap, Pop, or New Age song(s) that would've fit the tone or theme for Diamond Is Unbreakable. KoRn? Slipknot? Fear Factory? Powerman 5000? Static-X? Any band or experimental project with a dark tone? Since there is a character named after Enigma, an Enigma song would've worked. Then again, what am I talking about? The JoJo's Bizarre Adventure franchise dropped the ball by not acquiring Ronnie James Dio's song, "Egypt" for the Stardust Crusaders "Battle In Egypt" Arc. The fact that Hirohiko Araki named his supervillain, Dio Brando after Ronnie James Dio but has NO song by Dio used as an opening or ending theme still has me reeling. It may seem like I'm making a big deal out of nothing, but the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure franchise heavily focuses on characters named after Western musicians. Meanwhile, did anyone catch the reference to Queen's song, "Another One Bites The Dust" in Diamond Is Unbreakable: Episode 7?- 15 replies
