What Are You Thinking About Right Now?
Lynnrael replied to DragonSinger's topic in General Discussion
I'm currently thinking about how profoundly affirming my visit in California was. on the trip out there, i ordered food at the airport, and gave my deadname for the order. on the trip back home I stopped at the same place and i confidently said my chosen name for the order, like it wasn't something i had struggled with a week before. and it struck me then just how amazing that was, and how much it helps to have your name and gender affirmed often by people who love you. family can make such an enormous difference, and I'm glad mine are supportive. despite all the pain I've had at the hands of family in the past, I think I'm pretty lucky that we're getting a chance to heal -

look, if you leave me alone in a warehouse with zero supervision and nothing to do, I'm going to end up doing something like using the pallet jacks to skate from one side to the other. I've managed to figure out how to keep it going for a very long distance by oscillating the handle back and forth. I'm not sure how safe this is, but I'm having a blast. -

I've been listening to the let's talk about feelings album by Lagawagon. i forgot how good this was, but also, i don't remember it being this long. I'm pretty sure the one i had only went to Owen Meaney now I've got to listen to the stuff I didn't remember cause if it's as good as the first half this will be a nice treat -
I'm not saying what zoomers are experiencing is somehow unique, but there are aspects of it that are somewhat unprecedented. ecological collapse on a massive scale is pretty much guaranteed at this point in a way it never was. in the past, wide scale problems like the hole in the ozone layer were adequately addressed, but that's not happening with climate change. at best, we might get really lucky and see regulations that lesson the worst of the ecological collapse, but that's supposing a drastic change in how things are done. zoomers aren't facing anything new, but they're far more likely to see what will probably be the worst ecological collapse in human history than we are, and gen alpha even more so. I'm not trying to say that what the zoomers are facing is the worst thing ever, though it is likely to get way worse in their lifetime, more so for them than for you or I. I'm just saying we really shouldn't be surprised at their dark humor or that they're making jokes about 911. you're right about things previous generations faced, though, and i hope i didn't come of as dismissive of those experiences. I'm also glad you pointed out how much more magnified the grim reality is, along with dark humor as a coping mechanism. i do think it's a good idea for older generations to try and empathize with zoomers a bit, though. I think it's good to try and break the trend of dismissing younger generations or the things they face. it was bullshit when older generations did it to us, and i don't want to fall into that trap of thinking I'm somehow better and immune to that. (and yeah, I'm part Latina lol)

exactly my point. Zoomers have to deal with all kinds of messed up shit that other generations didn't

also the generation that watched the world let an equivalent amount of people die every day during the height of the pandemic, when they were supposed to be coming of age. there's also the whole planet being made unlivable by climate change in their lifetime thing. and living in an increasingly shitty capitalist dystopia. it's really not surprising that they have a dark and difficult to understand sense of humor. given everything
