Would you pay $45+ to see [as] alum Tim Heidecker?
Toonamiguy321 replied to OwlChemist81's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
I’d consider it if I was being paid $45. -
This isn’t quite right. Streaming was their competition, even if not from a direct standpoint. When a distributor is looking for a western home for their show, did they want it to be a stream exclusive headliner, or give it to Toonami for them to bury? That’s where they made a mistake, streaming was always their competition even if they insisted it was not, and now they are paying the price where the only anime afforded to them are sequels that are a month and a half or more behind their stream release. Toonami got a brief taste of what it felt like to be the gatekeeper of anime in the western market back in the 90s, and they never really seemed ready to accept that wasn’t the case anymore.

It looks extremely cheap. Like distractingly so. If that’s what they are putting in the promo, I shudder to think of what normal scenes look like. They dumped all the money into a couple set pieces and the rest will suffer. That aside, it actually does feel like One Piece. The characters feel like who they are supposed to be. So often we see a live action project where the entire cast are nothing like the original. I still don’t think it will be good, but it looks like it will be mediocre enough to give a chance for a few laughs. The cheap looks and pedal to the metal pacing is gonna be a huge hurdle for it though.

It’s starting to look more like the spigot is willingly turned off just to save money. They don’t need to tap Viz or Sentai for content if they can keep a steady flow of this Max bound stuff filling up the block. With only 3 flexible slots, they can easily get through a year of Toonami with only 2-3 acquired shows.

Spoilers in the video. Looks like Dr Stone is going to be a split cour show, it picks back up in Japan in October, so probably a return to Toonami in November. That gives us a little bit more schedule flexibility to sneak in FLCL. At least I hope that’s the plan and they don’t plan to just stall for 2-3 months until the next half is ready. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iVxKp_d62ow

Dammit, I wanted this series to be dead after how it was treated on Toonami. I can’t go through that a second time.

Toonami always ends up a disaster when something throws the times off, even by a small amount. I’d say we get back to where we were this week. I wouldn’t be surprised if the time oddity messed up a few DVRs as well. They actually did fix the Stone promo to say 12:45, but it was pretty late in the week.

It actually was available on Saturday, Swimpedia got it from somewhere. I don’t believe it’s actually appeared on air yet though -
Fresh July schedules, MAWS at midnight as expected
Toonamiguy321 replied to Toonamiguy321's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
Staffing and budget has nothing to do with it. At times when the block was in great shape, we saw gaps in the schedule because no sequel or popular shonen was ready to air. If they had more budget, they would go out and waste it on something like Demon Slayer S2 or Spy X Family, then we would have a schedule gap again when those shows end because they sunk the entire budget into them. They would never even consider using an extended budget for B list shows from Sentai that would stock the block for a year. -
Last year I think they also teased it in a panel just to give us that excuse reel, so I’m going into this expecting another delay. The only thing worse would be an abrupt cancellation but if they are title dropping it, then it’s safe from that. If they do announce it for October, wonderful. At this point in the year without a single peep on either, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to consider a delay for one or both FLCL seasons. The last two had like a 6 month delay, so it’s not unheard of.

6/24 was not announced because it will just be looping back to the first episode of Food Wars S5. Whatever you believe in, pray to him/her/it that this is just a one week stopgap and they aren’t going to do a second run of the season after Superman’s double premier. -
[as] expansion gets new nostalgia block
Toonamiguy321 replied to Top Gun's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
I think because of its worldwide presence, they will keep CN alive, even if only for an hour or two per day. It’s worth just enough to not let it die completely on US cable. Streaming is still going to be the future. People are never going back to how cable worked. Where streaming needs to fix itself is cutting back on projects. Before, it was green lights for everything. Now, it needs to be green lights only for things they think people will like. What I think streaming really needs is some kind of third party mediator that will offer various stream services under a single bill. Yes, I see the irony of how that is exactly like cable, but it’s the only way to get over this current hurdle of people being frustrated over excess subscriptions. I don’t know how it would work or the legal requirements to put it together, but it’s the best path forward. For example, imagine you buy the Toonamiguy Extra Premium package that gives you Hulu, Netflix and Max for a low price that is slightly cheaper than buying all 3 individually. Pick up the Toonamiguy Extra Premium with Happy Ending package and you get the porno channel in there too. Discreet and unlisted on your credit card bill, so no one will know Longschlonglord69 is paying for porn. -

Even in years past when they had plenty of money they didn’t want to take any risks. More budget is not going to solve that problem, it’s just going to encourage them to chase the typical suspects, which even if they did get them, would ironically put them right back into the same position of likely being under funded. -

I’ll throw in on this bet too. Something like this. 12 - UWE 12:30 - AoT 2 - Naruto 2:30 - MHA Have to agree with Jman, if they can’t fill the time they have, it doesn’t make sense to get more time. They have shown time and again they are not willing to get out of their own way when it comes to show acquisition, can’t run a block with no shows. Now, the fact that we can’t even get an hour promotion to set us up at 11-2 is very disappointing still. Give the Toonami fans a break AS, we are getting old. 2am is the new 5am. -

Wow, they are actually doing exactly what people asked for. I think this really shows how devastated the Cartoon Network brand is if they aren’t willing to have this be a CN thing. People loved it in October during the 30 year event. But, as the numbers have shown, it’s mostly adults tuning in, and these cartoons appeal most to 20 somethings. Definitely will have this on for background noise when I can.
