Honestly, the chunk of episode they chose for the prank wasn’t great. Kinda a slow start to set up the cast. Necessary, but not a great teaser. I enjoyed the rest and had a few laughs in each episode. It’s a show I’ll remember to catch on Sundays. I think AS is putting too much burden on its shoulders, they seem to expect it to stand hand in hand with Fox content right out of the gate, which is just unreasonable. Given some time, I think at the very least Theo will go down as one of the networks more amusing characters. As for the ratings, I just believe the potential for a prank may have lured some lapsed viewers back for the night. Nothing groundbreaking, especially since we saw comparable numbers about a month ago, but definitely some non regular traffic. The fact that it’s not advertised is the reason for that. You gotta be there to catch an AS prank. They may have advertised one, but you just can never be sure if that second one is coming. And hey, we did end up getting a little nod to 2012, so if you turned out you got something. You could even argue that the fact that they chose a clip that prominently displays Toriko for the little montage could be tiny prank of its own.

I’ll bet the block also saw a bump from people tuning in expecting a prank. A lot of people don’t seem to grasp the timing on AS pranks. Adult Swim put a ton of stock into Royal Crackers, so I’ll bet there is some major disappointment in its mediocre start. They have its reruns peppered all over the schedule which will likely cause rapid fatigue in it. I enjoyed it for what it was, but AS seems to think it can be one of their new tentpoles.

april fools April Fool's Stunt Discussion Thread!!

They had no money back then. They had to try incredibly hard to make things genuinely entertaining to cover up the fact that the shows were created with pocket change. Once they got the money, they started half assing everything. And honestly, say what you will about him, but Lazzo was the glue holding everything together. He had a pulse on what was a good idea and what was a bad idea. He could be a jackass at times, but he still knew what was best for the network and wasn’t afraid to turn away crap ideas. He didn’t mince words for why Birdgirl shouldn’t be made, and as soon as he leaves they move forward with it, and we find out he was 100% right. -

Unfortunately, another absolute stinker of a year. They didn’t even try past the 30 minute mark. I wonder if they had planned something with Rick and Morty, but had abort at the last second and didn’t have the time to replace it with anything. Ah well, maybe something tomorrow night for the Toonami crowd. -
The MHA double up continues, but we will NOT finish the season on 4/15. Instead, episode 23 will rerun in the lead slot, followed by the premier of episode 24. Presumably, this will repeat the following week. 24 reruns, then 25 airs the finale. Then, the 29th we get AoT, and the week after that is when Genndy’s rerun starts. It’s premiering on Thursday with 2 episodes, so that covers both slots for that week.

Reposting this here. I’m leaning towards this being the real deal, but no telling what they are actually doing to these shows. I have also read that the first timeslot is rated TV14, and the second is TVMA. So that bumps out the Unicorn Warriors theory. Hoping for two brand new pilots. Looking forward to tomorrow night, no oddities to be seen in the shows prior to Toonami. I’m still pulling hard to TOM and Sara to host the Toonami comedy pregame. -

Final April Fools predictions?
Toonamiguy321 replied to Toonamiguy321's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
The online schedule has changed from 2 hours of Aqua Teen to this lineup. The Space Ghost episode is Fire Ant, presumably the extended version. One of the infomercials is Broomshakalaka. The Ambient Swim is Christmas themed. And up top is two total mystery slots. No idea how these pieces fit together, or if any of them are even real. This could be a second layer smokescreen for all we know. -
This is what confuses me most about this idea. I can see why they don’t want a forth brand between Cartoonito, CN and AS, but we really need that hypothetical Adult Swim Jr for a few hours each night. Like 6-8. Acme Night was exactly that, just without the full commitment to making it an actual brand. A home for content thats a bit too tame for Adult Swim, but skewing a bit too old for CN. But instead, not only did they just make that time into AS, but they are also dumping the shows that feel like prime 7pm content, way down at midnight, possibly even later on Toonami. The potential tonal whiplash coming off family friendly Superman going into Yolo or Mr Pickles will be ridiculous. Now, going from Superman at 7pm into KotH at 8pm would feel a lot better. KotH has always served as a good transitional show from CN to AS. It’s an adult oriented show, but it accomplishes this by simply not being very entertaining to kids. I get that they have a big demo of 20 somethings watching CN, but I don’t think that’s going to translate to being able to throw kids show at midnight and having that same crowd turn out.

That’s a good point. At that time, they weren’t shooting for that age demographic at all. But the way Oulween is talking about the future, they may end up significantly changing the demographic expectations for Toonami. I’m sure for now, everything is in a flexible, experimental phase. If these shows bomb because of porting them over to AS, then I doubt they will press forward with this and probably try the Acme Night model. But if they do good, would that reopen the door to Boruto? I certainly hope not, but the Shippuden finish line is within sight.

[adult swim] expands to 7:00 p.m. on May 1
Toonamiguy321 replied to Blatch's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
That tweet isn’t quite accurate. SBT, and anything else that’s written off is still dead forever. I believe I may have read at one point that maybe SBT could come back, but Genndy would have to get it on an entirely different network. And that’s not gonna happen. I hope if they have long term plans for this change, they start bringing in some other animators. Genndy’s artstyle gets old quick when it’s all you see.- 11 replies

One of the show staff said on Twitter they hoped to be able to share release dates soon, but did say this year. If it follows the footsteps of other AS projects, I’d assume they want to space releases out, rather than have it run on top of Unicorn Warriors. Or at the very least, not have them release so close together. Since right now they are going to have Royal Crackers and Unicorn Warriors premiering new episodes at the same time. So maybe June or July?

I just looked at my own profile, my join date is October 2022. So since I started posting here, the only shows added to the lineup have been Made in Abyss S2, MHA S6, and Food Wars S5. I’m fairly certain I had a generally positive response to the first 2, and a “finally something” response to Food Wars. So right out of the gate, you are way off the mark on me being “static”. What I assume is happening is you hone in on negative opinions I have expressed (reruns, stalling, etc) and the ones that were middle of the road or positive flew over your head because they just blended in with everyone else’s. This particular topic isn’t even something you can really regurgitate opinions on, because turning the block into a waste bin for PG reruns is a brand new idea circa today, and I think it’s a shitty one. I don’t assume when it comes to Toonami anymore. It’s cool that Demarco asked for opinions on Sentai shows, but that is meaningless until we actually see results. I can’t count how many times I have seen Demarco fish for show opinions on twitter over the years, and just do nothing with what he is told. Demarco loves to say things are in the pipeline, but that doesn’t mean they actually are as again, we have seen many times. The only things that are facts as you say, is FLCL, Uzumaki (unless delayed again), and AoT. Anything beyond that is total speculation. And as I have shown above, the math simply is not there to work in any extra shows. You may not like the math, but it is based on the factual information we currently have. There can’t be surprise shows we don’t know about if there isn’t room to air them. If you are tuning into Toonami for the anime, it’s gonna feel pretty dead to that fanbase. That doesn’t mean that it’s gone from the Adult Swim schedule, but if it’s not airing the content you tune in for, and does not appear it will do so for a significant period of time, why tune in at all? Something can be dead and still exist. I have never advocated or demanded a return to Toonami’s glory days. Would I like that? Absolutely. But that’s not being realistic. All I have ever asked for is Toonami to do better, or at the very minimum, not get worse. Burning through its anime reserves so they can squeeze in a rerun is not what I consider doing better.

I heard someone call it Velma but with Superman characters. Based on some tweets I have seen from its creators, I fear they may be on the right track. This is something I despise about discussing Toonami. Some people act like they are being physically assaulted when someone shares an OPINION that isn’t cheery and positive. Not every development for the block has to be praised, I think this is a shitty direction to take the block, which I’m entitled to feel, just as you are entitled to feel the direction is fine. And I won’t be pressured into not sharing that opinion either. Toonami’s direction is not hard to predict, especially when they start giving us details. We do, in fact know Unicorn Warriors is set for a Toonami encore, so that means the only slot I took liberties on was the midnight one, but if those are going to make their promised 2023 release, they need to make an appearance fairly soon. If a few weeks from now, a schedule drops on the Facebook page with an expansion or Unicorn Warriors is slotted at 2:30 and we get two new shows, I’ll gladly eat my crow and everyone can lay into me for being wrong about everything. But I have been watching Toonami long enough to be fairly confident in the prediction I laid out above being nearly, if not entirely accurate.
-
I will reiterate my very first point, I do NOT think Toonami will be cancelled. In fact, this news probably means it’s safer than it has been in a long time. However, many fans of the block tune in specifically for the anime, as it’s the only place on cable to see anime. Here’s a rough breakdown of the post May schedule given the information we currently have. 12 - FLCL Grunge/Shoegaze and Uzumaki (16 weeks minimum). Very good chance each FLCL will loop in the same timeslot as Prog and Alt did, so that’s another potential 12 weeks 12:30 - Unicorn and Superman (20 weeks minimum) 1 - Food Wars/other sequel anime acquisition 1:30 - One Piece (indefinite) 2 - Shippuden (indefinite) 2:30 - rerun slot (indefinite) If you are a fan of the blocks acquisitions, you don’t got much to look forward to here. One slot to play with. People who want the block to branch out on its anime choices? Completely shut out. Doom is very justified for those fans. Now, as you say, Adult Swim is expanding an hour. Could they glue another hour on Toonami to accommodate these shows? Possibly. But with their current struggles to fill the schedule, I don’t see that happening. Best case scenario is the entire block is slid up by an hour. Which hey, not a bad thing, and maybe with that change we could justify the last slot not being reruns only. We will have to wait for information to develop on that matter in the coming weeks. You know how people often claim Naruto killed old Toonami? That’s never been a literal statement that Naruto killed it from a performance standpoint. If you were not a Naruto fan when all the block aired was Naruto, the block may as well have been dead cause you likely weren’t watching it at all. The block getting a bunch of non premier western content filling up its already limited time doesn’t make me feel confident in its future, or my own future tuning into it. I am one of those people who wanted to see them delve deep into that Sentai catalog, and barring an expansion, that has basically been rendered impossible for the foreseeable future. Of course, all of this is just like, my opinion man, and could be (and likely is) entirely worthless. But I also doubt I’m the only Toonami viewer who feels this way. Time will tell if the brass at AS is making the right choices here or not depending how the audience reacts.

[adult swim] expands to 7:00 p.m. on May 1
Toonamiguy321 replied to Blatch's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
I much prefer Toonami to all just be in one area. I’d hate to have to get home super early for an hour (unless you meant reruns in which case wouldn’t matter to me), then have to occupy 2-3 hours waiting for Toonami to come back. Much rather just see the entire block itself move up an hour.- 11 replies

Man, this seems like the end for Toonami. Not that it will be cancelled, but instead it’s just going to be a dumping ground for western reruns and the occasional original. One Piece and Naruto will always bring up the rear. I know some people are all in on Toonami having western content, but there also quite a few like myself who are here for the anime, and if the block isn’t airing anime I’ll just take a hiatus until it does again. One Piece and Naruto are just the extra experience for the other shows, I’m not invested enough into either to tune in for them on their own.

Toonamiguy321 replied to Blatch's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
Bro what, Adult Swim needs less time to fill, not more. They still only have Royal Crackers on deck, and Bobs Burgers is still on its way out. What are they gonna do with an extra hour? More Fox reruns? Then we have Unicorn Warriors, which would actually make sense for that early hour, getting dumped at midnight. Can we at least move Toonami to 11-2 so I can get to bed earlier?- 11 replies

IMO people aren’t crapping on the show or Genndy. They are crapping on CN hitting the abort button for something that was pretty well sanitized for their network. Not everything has to be edgy, adult action animation. People were enthusiastic for CN to move forward on a PG action title after so many years of having no action content. It ain’t no Demon Slayer, but a PG show is a pretty big step up from the typical Gumball and TTGo fare on CN. But instead, it’s getting dumped at midnight on a Thursday, basically a death sentence and guarantee of failure. At the very least, they could have met some middle ground and aired it at like 9pm so kids could catch it before bed on a school night. On the Toonami side, fans of the block are upset at the prospect of its reruns eating up the most valuable slot on the block, further frustration to an already unstable and unstocked block. There is a lot of lingering frustration tied to Genndy content because of what’s happened with Primal S2.
-
Well they aren’t doing a very good job, because if this airs on Toonami, it is in fact another rerun. You are right though, this one is probably out of Demarco’s hands. But that’s not a reason to withhold negative feelings towards the schedule team if they really did force Toonami to burn off probably it’s biggest pickup of last and this year just so they could cram on another mid Genndy rerun. It also shows a growing disregard for the blocks future if we continue to see less and less acquisitions and instead just getting sloppy second reruns and originals people have zero faith in. You could make the argument that Toonami is “saving money”, but for what? We have been “saving money” since February. When do we get our payoff? Until less than 24 hours ago, this was presumed to be a Cartoon Network show. More specifically, it’s slightly looser content Acme block. I highly doubt the show went through any radical changes for its shift to Adult Swim. Interviews with Genndy cite it being a family friendly adventure. I’d expect this to be more in line with CN era Samurai Jack where the enemies are robots are some other inoffensive non red blood creature. Same with the language, maybe it will pull a PG-13 movie gimmick where someone says shit one time, but other than that I expect clean dialog.
-
That’s a major assumption. This is an untested show, Primal did well because people already liked Primal. For all we know this will crater the entire night at midnight since it was created for CN, not AS. I can’t see a scenario where 2/6 slots on the block being reruns is going to be helpful, both to ratings and morale. If nothing has changed, it won’t have seasons. This is supposed to be a 10 episode miniseries.
-
I wouldn’t pay it any mind if it was treated according to its status. A rerun should not get the red carpet midnight slot treatment. It should get the 2:30a treatment. All this means for us is 10 (or more) weeks without a new show. And there’s no point in watching it, because we all know AS will beat the piss out of the rerun as they are doing to Primal. Even if it ends up not being the lead, that’s annoying too if it goes at 12:30, because that means having to find something else to do for 30 minutes before the block comes back. I wouldn’t call this a sequel to 2022, because at least last year we had a pretty solid January. So far this year has sucked ass on the acquisition front and shown no real signs of improvement any time soon.
