I'm sad to see One Piece go, and I definitely wish it was being replaced by a better show, but circumstances are circumstances and there isn't anything that can be done about it now. And in all honesty, I really don't think One Piece should come back to Toonami. Don't get me wrong, I would be happy if it returns, but I don't think it should. It's had it's time on the block, and now it's time for something else to fill that niche. It's also one less long runner for the block, which makes it all the better.

One Piece leaving Toonami. Tokyo Ghoul to replace it.
CaptainStarwind replied to 3ngag3's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
Well then, I stand corrected. I still don't understand what ratings are good for One Piece's slot, but apparently they aren't good enough for Adult Swim. Whatever, it's just business. One Piece has a good run, so it's time for it to go. I hold no grudges. -
I don't think anyone can say that Toonami gave anything other than total support to One Piece. They aired the show for nearly 4 years. They gave the show a marathon. They've consistently defended One Piece's ratings, to both the fans and to Adult Swim higher ups. For it's first two years, they kept One Piece in an early timeslot on the block, despite the fact that it's ratings probably warranted moving it down. It's clear that Toonami loves the show and wants to see it continue. Cancelling One Piece was not a decision made out of malice, as far as I can see. That being said, I do think Top Gun is right in that Toonami sort of screwed the series from the beginning. Davy Back was an absolutely terrible place to start the series, even if that was the HD starting point of the show, and there's no doubt that it alienated a lot of people from watching the series. There were a number of better places to start: the beginning (which is what I, and a lot of other people, wanted), from directly before Water 7, like Top Gun suggested, from current with the dub, etc. I'm also quite surprised that ratings was the main cause for the removal. I still don't understand what ratings [as] expects One Piece to get at such an early in the morning timeslot. The retention was fine for One Piece compared to the other shows. Perhaps it might have had something to do with the recent trend of the last show on the block beat One Piece in ratings? Regardless, I don't understand. At the same time though, I know [as] is a business, so I don't hold any ill will to Adult Swim. Finally, Tokyo Ghoul on Toonami. I sincerely don't know how to feel about this. Part of me wants the show that replaces One Piece to be a much better show, like the 2003 Fullmetal Alchemist. The other part is excited that we have another Edgelord 2 deep 4 u anime that I can just riff and make fun of while watching. I can't really say it's being made up to be a scapegoat, or anything, though, since I know it HAS been requested by people. I don't know WHO would request a show like this, but it HAS been requested.

And yet again, CaptainStarwind is late to the party. 27 full pages late, in fact... I take a two day trip to Philadelphia and the big news happens. Before I get into my thoughts on it, I'd like to say that after some debate, the age old question of which place has a better cheesesteak (Pat's or Geno's) has been answered, and the answer is clearly Pat's. They're still both too fucking expensive, but I've come to expect this out of tourist trap food places. Okay, so One Piece is finished on Toonami. I have to say, I did not see this coming at all. While I am definitely saddened by this decision, given that One Piece has been a Toonami staple for such a long time, I can't really say that the decision was a bad one to make. We all knew that One Piece couldn't stay on the block forever. No show can, even the ones that I think should (Inuyasha). I think what got to most people was how little of the show we actually got through. We only did get through two arcs on Toonami (Enies Lobby and Thriller Bark), which really isn't a lot in the grand scheme of things. Regardless of that, though, One Piece has been on Toonami for nearly four years. I think that four years on the revived Toonami was a generous enough time for One Piece, even if it feels like we didn't get through all that much. There's also the matter of the amount of long runners on the block: I've made no secret of the fact that I thought there were far too many long running shows on the block. Between DBS, DBZ Kai, Shippuden, HxH, and One Piece, we had effectively most of the block locked up for a time. One of the remedies I suggested was removing One Piece and Shippuden. Well, One Piece is gone. Unfortunately, they didn't get rid of Shippuden with it, but at least this will free up another slot for shows to rotate through. Now, for WHY One Piece is being removed. The obvious answer here would be ratings, but can we really say that? I mean think about it: One Piece aired at 1:30 in the morning. What kind of ratings is Adult Swim expecting for a slot like that? They can't be that high; if they were, One Piece would have been taken off a while ago. Besides, the retention rate One Piece had was just about as good as the rest of the block's shows, so I doubt that's it. One Piece has been getting beat lately by the last show on the block, so maybe that? But, again, that's happened before, and One Piece survived that. Does Funimation have something to do with it? Perhaps they raised the price per episode above something [as] was willing to pay. Or perhaps DeMarco just got tired of One Piece being on Toonami. Hopefully we'll find out for certain. Finally... Tokyo. FUCKING. Ghoul. I've heard this is Edge Lord the Anime. I hope not to be disappointed. -

Oh Jesus, is that what Toku is? I knew that Toku replaced Funimation Channel when it ended, but I didn't know that it was shit. It's really sad, too, because I used to get the Funimation Channel when I was subscribed to Fios back about 6 years ago. I absolutely loved that channel, and it got me back into anime after a time of thinking I was too cool for it (I wasn't. I'm not cool). I'm sad to see it relegated to this. -

One Piece will just keep chugging along it it' s middling pace until the series is over. That's really what it's going to come to here. -

That would only work assuming they can get multiple airings of each a show a week, otherwise it will be just the same pace on a different night. If they could swing it, though, I'd enjoy it. Get through Shippuden and One Piece quicker, and free up Toonami for some shorter shows. -

Pretty much this. Burger King used to run the "Have It Your Way" promotion with Adult swim. The winner prgrammed Adult Swim for the night. Some schedules didn't have any anime, one of them was entirely anime, and the rest of them were mixed between comedy and anime. In 2009, the promotion ran on a Friday night, and the winner picked an episode of Bleach to air, so it became the last time anime aired on weeknights. -

Wow, an action show on a weeknight? When was the last time that happened? Well it seems the last action show to air on a weeknight was an airing of Bleach on July 16, 2010, at 2:15 in the morning. It was part of the Burger King schedule promotion from that year. Beyond that, Inuyasha aired at 5:30 on the weeknights throughout 2008 after the regular action on weeknights was cancelled, so this really is a big step that Adult Swim is rerunning Samurai Jack on a weeknight. What could this lead to? Possibly to some weeknight action, though I'm not going to hold my breath for it right now. Let's just hope the rerun gets good ratings, and we can go from there. -
Expanding the first episode of the series out to movie length. I feel as though this will either turn out really good or really terrible.

I doubt it. There's nothing recent worth giving a rerun right now. Besides, [as] invested in getting the HD tapes, so I'd imagine they would want to use them. -

After snooping around Toonzone I found some info. Drinky Crow, Superjail, Young Person's Guide to History, and Delocated were the shows that aired in the DST hour that year. I cannot find out when that hour aired (before or after Bleach). Given what I already had down, though, I'm going to assume it was before Bleach. It would make more sense that way, anyway. -

First sign of ratings this week seem good, so thank God. Toonami always seems to do a bit better this time of year. -

Unfortunately, I have practically no way of double checking this. When I made this document, I was using primarily the Trunk's Watches Threads on the old Lithium boards. Those, obviously, are now all gone. I guess I can check and see what Toonzone has, but I've seen some problems with their schedule listings before, so who knows what will show up. -
