The Toonami Ratings Thread 1.0 :You are on a new board
CaptainStarwind replied to StarPanda's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
You really think they're gonna care what a show airing at 2:30 in the morning gets? They got the show as nostalgia trip, so I doubt they're expecting it to do incredible numbers each week. Besides, what would you rather see there? Bebop reruns again? -
Outlaw Star in HD on August 19th
CaptainStarwind replied to The1gairon's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
I thought that it was obvious that HD doesn't necessarily mean 16:9. I mean, my YuYu Hakusho Blu-ray sets were HD, and that show was 4:3. Granted, the Blu-rays I have are 16:9 technically 16:9, since the show is hardcode pillarboxed. If anyone remembers YuYu Hakusho from April Fools 2012, that's why the aspect ratio for the show was buggy: they aired the HD version of the episode and compressed it to a 4:3 size. -
Okay....(Dragonball Super Spoiler)

I wouldn't go as far as to say that. The Saiyans were already established as a pretty warlike race prior to Frieza, weren't they? Had Frieza never occured, I don't think Vegeta would be a mass murderer, but he definitely wouldn't be a nice person. -

DBZ Kai marathon? Could be a worse choice; at least I'm enjoying Kai. Could have been a Super marathon. -

Goddamn you lol I forgot about the 1999 series. Haven't watched it yet but it's on my list. Anyone willing to offer a perspective as to how it compares to the 2011 series? Worse adaptation? Better? I know 1999 doesn't cover as much, but for what it does cover, how do the two compare? -
FunimationNow? More like FunimationLater!

I got through almost the entire post thinking "Well, at least Ben isn't bitching about Sony buying Funimation." Then I got to the end. It was at this point I pulled out the vodka and decided to get drunk. -

I may not be speaking for everyone here, but for me, college football is different to watch than NFL. I don't particularly care about one team in college football, I just watch any game I can. This was also the mindset that a lot of my friends in college had. Granted, I played football, and so did most of my friends, so maybe I'm skewed a bit. But if I'm not, then I can definitely see college football affecting Toonami ratings. -

New Outlaw Star is a pipe dream at this point. The series came out almost 20 years ago. While it isn't impossible to get another season, it's extremely unlikely, and a lot of things would have to fall into place perfectly for it to happen. The only reason the Samurai Jack revival happened was because Gennedy already had plans in motion to make the Samurai Jack finale movie. Williams Street has also mentioned multiple times that FLCL is the favorite of the anime they've aired. It wouldn't surprise me if they've been clamoring for new FLCL for years now, and they're only now getting to it. JoJo Part 5 is going to happen with or without the help of Toonami. I doubt Toonami would go for a HxH revival. I agree that of all the options, Toonami co-funding a Gundam is the most likely, though I still don't think it's going to happen. -

I already made a post about this, so I won't repost it here, but damn. RIP Luvv [i hope it isn't true] -
Christ. I'll be honest, I didn't really have that much contact with Luuv. I don't really have a long history with ASMB like a lot of you other guys do: I only started lurking in 2012, and didn't even make an account until the latter half of 2013. My point is, I didn't really know Luuv too well. But from what I have seen of him, he was levelheaded and a pretty good guy. I never had any sort of problem with him. He was a constant presence on both ASMB and Unevenedge, and it'll be weird not seeing his verbose posts around here. I'm all for giving him a special rank. This song popped into my head while browsing through the thread. It's one of my favorite songs, and I figured it would be fitting to post. I'm hoping for the best, but expecting the worst. RIP Luvv

I'm sorry, but I can't agree that SAO II was better than SAO I. SAO II seemed more gimmicky to me than SAO, if that makes any sense. I really didn't enjoy GunGale all that much. It was okay, but it kind of bored me, to be honest. I guess "MMO but with guns and crossdressing Kirito" doesn't really strike my fancy. Excalibur was decent fun and was over the top enough to be enjoyable. Mother's Rosario was better than GunGale for me, but overdid it with the AIDS plot. SAO I had it's faults too, but I thought it was better overall. I genuinely think that the Aincrad Arc was a great arc, and honestly I think it wraps up well enough that you can consider it a little show in itself. Alfheim wasn't as good, but made up for it by having Oberon the Fairy King become one of my favorite villains.

This is entirely right, as sad as I am to say. I think we all need to get out of this mindset that JoJo is going to be pulling amazing ratings on Toonami. JoJo is popular, yes, but it's popular as a meme. And as we're well aware, online popularity is not equal to real life popularity. Look at Toonami's ratings, for example. Toonami shows trend on Twitter every Saturday, but that doesn't translate to ratings for the block. You can apply the same concept to JoJo: It's a veritable fountain of memes on the internet, but casuals aren't going to get into it, because, like Daos said, there's no mainstream appeal. And that isn't to say JoJo doesn't have a lot of fans, but if those people wanted to watch Stardust Crusaders, they would have done so when the show was airing in Japan. They weren't gonna wait for the dub. As for the ratings overall, what needs to be said? JoJo dropped the ball, Shippuden gained on Lupin. While I really do hope that Shippuden leaves the block after the Pain arc is finished, if it doesn't, one can almost make a case for the show to move up on the block. -
Netflix trying to murder Toonami
CaptainStarwind replied to MasqueradeOverture's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
I'd definitely agree with this. It seems that all Toonami has been doing up to this point has been getting fan requested shows when they become available (I.E. When the hype is over.) Just having a dub premiere of a show isn't going to cut it anymore. Toonami needs to take a risk and air simuldubs when they can. -
I wasn't really a big fan of SAO Season 2, so personally I would say no. Objectively, though, I'd agree with Poke: give her a heads up of the more, "controversial" moments of the season and just play it by ear.

Revolutionary Girl Utena Episode 1 I'm not entirely sure what I expected going into this show, but I'm pleased with it so far. The animation and music definitely speaks of the 90s, which is always a plus to me. The aesthetic of the show is a bit hard to pin down: surreal maybe, but I think that may be going to far. I think dreamlike describes it better. But I've enjoyed the first episode, so on to the next one tomorrow.

Mobile Suit Gundam Episodes 42-43 I thought that it was a pretty good show, though the dub could be a bit hammy at times, and some of the music cues and scene cuts seemed really abrupt. I'll just attribute that to it being a 1970s anime and give it a pass. I've been trying to finish this series since high school, so actually getting around to doing it really makes me pleased. Revolutionary Girl Utena replaces Mobile Suit Gundam.

I've finished Ghost Stories. Maybe I'll go back in a while and watch the show subbed, but that won't be for a while. Steins;Gate replaces Ghost Stories.

I mean... in the grand scheme of things the ratings aren't so bad, but I'd like to think that we could at least get both Dragon Balls over 1000K if Super was a premiere.
