yea. I'd like to see this movie be made too. I'd make all homophobes watch it and tell them these are the people we're sending after them

sadly they were slain in 338 BC

The spartans were more famous because they resisted alexander the great, who totally annihilated the sacred band of thebes. That's not to say Alexander could not have conquered them, but he chose not to, needing his forces to conquer Persia. Pyrrhus a relative of Alexander who lived some time after did try to invade sparta, but was killed by a woman who threw a heavy roof tile at him from height.  Later the Spartans were conquered by rome because they weren't actually crazy one man army supermen like they are depicted as being. They were also really conservative and their military tactics were horribly outclassed by the roman legions by the time they arrived.

The Spartans were also eugenicists, and had a policy of slave labor that inspired the Nazis. Basically the helots, (the spartan slave class) would have been much better off had the Persians conquered Greece. They were actually quite enlightened empire builders who granted various rights to client kingdoms, including freedom of worship.

So basically, thebans good, Persians good, Pyrrhus unlucky, Romans good, Spartans kind of over rated assholes.

they don't teach you about this in school

in all fairness, they didn't teach me about the Spartan thing in school either....

Figures. Pederasty generally isn't considered good pr.

frankly I wish a gay army would rise up and wipe out all the homophobia in modern times but I doubt that's gonna happen

the spartans were actually evil, the Thebans were good, as Giuliano explained

history rewards the wicked and erases the good

well that's an over simplification, the thebans were good to thebans and about as good as any Hellenic city state really. shit if you are a foreigner or a woman but pretty nice as a male citizen.

It wasn't until the romans introduced the idea of citizenship being granted to foreigners that everyone could aspire to be protected by the rights of the state. Still far from perfect but it was a step up. The persians as far as I am aware didn't give a flying fuck whether you were a citizen or not, if they even had the concept, subjects of the shahenshah would be more accurate.

good and evil are all a matter of perception and opinion. there is no real difference

edited the post to more reflect the actual reason why the Spartans got a movie and the Thebans didn't

I never did. Pederasty =/= pedophilia, in the strictest sense of the words. I'm not even gonna bother explaining anything because you can't see anything past the lens of the contemporary social climate.

y'know, I thought this was a funny little historic detail we could all laugh about...guess not >.>

if you hadn't called me out if would've been

you've been here long enough to know better than to mention my name in relation to anything gay :|
